The program is under the supervision of the Volunteer Coordinator and is held as necessary to meet the volunteer orientation needs of Island Hospice.PROCEDURE: Volunteer training/orientation includes, at a minimum, the following:Hospice Goals, Services, ResponsibilitiesHistory and philosophy of hospice and explanation of the philosophy of Island HospiceOrganization of Island HospiceIsland Hospice services and its interdisciplinary team approach to careBereavement ServicesMedicare Hospice BenefitPatient Rights/ConfidentialityPatient Rights and Responsibilities, including confidentiality and HIPAAAdvance Directives Signs and symptoms of abuse and neglectPain managementDuties and Responsibilities/ReportingGrievances and ConcernsVolunteer’s role, including scope and limitations.Documentation and reportingGuidance related to individual responsibilitiesEmergency Procedures/at DeathSigns and symptoms of approaching deathDeath and dyingFamily CopingFamily dynamics, coping mechanisms and psychosocial/spiritual issues of terminal illness, death and bereavement.Patient and family carePsychosocial needs of patients and their familiesSpiritual needs of patients and their familiesListening skills/Communication/Professional BoundariesSafetyInfection control procedures, including universal precautions, TB screening, basic hand hygiene and Hepatitis BJoint home Introductory visit to asses for patient and volunteer safety.
