It is designed for middle and high school teachers who are interested in introducing coding to their students. The workshop provides an accelerated overview of the course with emphasis on hands-on experience with the curriculum. This Creative Coding through Games and Apps workshop is designed to show teachers how to:Attract interest in computer science from a broad and diverse range of studentsTeach the fundamentals of programming and computational thinkingInstill confidence in working with technologyFoster creativity, curiosity, and collaborationTeach how to program computing devices to make things of real-world interest and use Goals: Upon completion of this course, participants willDescribe what a computer game isUse and implement common program control structuresRead code in the TouchDevelop environment and describe what it doesCreate and publish TouchDevelop apps and gamesAssignmentsThis professional development opportunity includes three different components, which are described below. Pre-conference WorkThe workshop participants’ experience with coding and/or teaching coding will vary from none at all to extensive. In order to focus workshop time on the course and its pedagogy, we are expected to complete some work in advance of the workshop to introduce or refresh your knowledge of basic programming (many of the same skills you will teach) and the Touch Develop tool that is used throughout the course. The advance work, freely available, is a combination of video-on-demand instruction and hand-on practice with Touch Develop. The advance work will require about 10 hours of your time.Pre-conference work (see attached documents in WVLearns) Planning DocumentComplete and post the planning document associated with this professional development opportunity to the dropbox for this course no later than September 12, 2017. Non-Degree Graduate credit may be obtained through daily conference attendance, the development of a project plan, implementation of the project and submission of a final project implementation report. Registration for this opportunity is open from March 1, 2017 through June 23, 2017. To access WVLearns, individuals enter their complete k12.wv.us email address as their login and their k12.wv.us password will be the same password for their WVLearns account. The WVLearns web address is will be two assessment points during this professional development opportunity:September 12, 2017: Project Planning Template completion and posting to the dropbox. Failure to post this assignment by September 12, 2017 will result in non-degree graduate credit NOT being awarded. Non-degree graduate credit registration payment will not be reimbursed, if this deadline is missed.November 17, 2017: Project Implementation Report will be posted to the course dropbox by November 17, 2017. There is the expectation that the project will be initiated no later than September 25, 2017 and implemented through at least November 1, 2017. The project may be continued after November 17, 2017. Grades of an “I” are assigned to incomplete work. Grades of an “I” must be corrected no later than October 9, 2017 for the Project Planning Document and December 1, 2017 for the Project Implementation Report.Certificate of CompletionUpon successful completion of this professional development opportunity?participants will receive a Certificate of Completion documenting successful completion of the course requirements.
