AP US History

Planning Steps for a DBQ

1. Read/Annotate/Analyze the prompt:

To what extent did the reform movements in the United States seek to expand democratic ideals between the years 1825-1855?

2. Brainstorm general knowledge about the time period & topic and define concept(s):

3. Based on your brainstorm, create a basic graphic organizer for how you might structure your essay response (examples: a T-chart, categories: Political/Econ/Social or other, Yes/No for agreement, etc.). Then list specific details of your outside information. As you read the documents, you will plug the documents into the graphic organizer (by number). You may refine the categories later in case you changed your mind.

4. Write a tentative thesis that addresses all parts of the question. Your essay needs to be guided by your thesis, not the documents. The documents and your outside evidence are there to support your thesis.

5. Read and analyze the documents.

a. Underline important info. in the documents and focus on the following: Audience, Purpose, Context, Point of View. Note in the margin next to each document the most significant aspect of your analysis.

b. Plug documents into your graphic organizer using their number so that you can synthesize outside and document information together.

c. When done with the documents, look at the graphic organizer for a visual representation of your thesis and check your tentative thesis to make sure you still agree with it. Also consider information that runs counter to your thesis.
