AR Goal-Setting Chart: Your Individual Point Requirement

Directions: Find you grade level equivalency score (labeled "GE") on your STAR Reading Goal Sheet from the beginning of the year. (See me if you can't find your paper.) Then, use a highlighter to highlight the row that best matches your level. This will tell you how many AR points you will need for each 6-week period. Finally, fill out the chart on the back of this paper to ensure you clearly understand your individual requirements.

Remember, you can use to check a book's Grade Equivalent Level (referred to as "GE" or "BL" (Book Level) or "ATOS Book Level") and the number of AR points it is worth.

Books you choose to read should normally be within your Suggested ZPD Range.

Note: 1. To get an A in Independent Reading, you must have the required amount of AR points. You must also write a thoughtful 3-5 sentence book review on that corresponds to the book for which you took an AR quiz (see guidelines on the "Independent Reading" Google Classroom post from September). When we start Book Clubs, part of your Independent Reading grade will also come from these activities. 2. AR quizzes must be taken in class with permission. I will give you time at the end of every grading period. You do not earn ANY points if you receive below 50% on the AR quiz. 3. Books we read as a class do NOT count towards your 6-week goal. (Though they will be counted under the "Assessments" part of your grade.) 4. You may earn extra credit if you earn more than the required points per 6-week grading period. These will "overflow" into the other grading periods per semester (e.g., if you earn extra points for one grading period, but less the next, your points should balance out to an appropriate average). At the end of the semester, remaining extra credit points for Independent Reading will be limited to raising your overall class grade no more than 2%. 5. If I have doubts about whether you are actually (and currently) reading the books you list, you may be required to discuss the novel one-on-one with me.
