So far when we used verbs (hablar, correr, escribir) we used them in the INFINITIVE FORM.
Me gusta hablar. ( I like TO talk )
In Spanish we recognize an INFINITIVE form of the verb because it ends with AR, ER, or IR.
There are THREE groups of verbs.
AR (the largest), ER, IR
We are going to study the CONJUGATIONS of AR verbs.
We CONJUGATE a verb to make it agree with a SUBJECT.
In English we don’t say:
“I to talk.” “You to run.” “He to write.”
We CONJUGATE the verb:
“I talk.” “You run.” “He writes.”
How do we CONJUGATE an “AR” verb?
Step #1. We take off the INFINITIVE ending (“AR”)
Hablar goes to HABL….
(habl… is called a stem/root)
Step #2. We add a NEW and APPROPRIATE ending.
For the “YO” form (to say what “I” do) after we drop the “AR” we add “O”
Habl… + o = hablo (I talk) Yo hablo
Let’s look at the verb list and conjugate all the AR verbs in the “Yo” form.
Bailar, practicar, nadar, usar, cantar, tocar, pasar tiempo, patinar, necesitar, escuchar,
esquiar, dibujar, hablar, trabajar, estudiar, enseñar
For the “TÚ” form (to say what “you familiar/singular” do) after we drop the “AR” we add “AS”
Habl… + as = hablas (You talk) Tú hablas
Let’s look at the verb list and conjugate all the AR verbs in the “Tú” form.
Bailar, practicar, nadar, usar, cantar, tocar, pasar tiempo, patinar, necesitar, escuchar,
esquiar, dibujar, hablar, trabajar, estudiar, enseñar
For the “ÉL, ELLA, UD.” forms (to say what “he/she DOES or you formal/singular” DO) after we drop the “AR” we add “A”
• Do not think that just because the Ud. form is conjugated like the “él, ella” forms that it all of a sudden means “he/she”.
• Just because “Ud.” means you… it cannot be conjugated like the “tú” form of the verbs.
Habl… + a = habla él habla (he talks)
ella habla (she talks)
Ud. habla
(you (formal) talk)
Let’s look at the verb list and conjugate all the AR verbs in the “él, ella, Ud.” forms.
Bailar, practicar, nadar, usar, cantar, tocar, pasar tiempo, patinar, necesitar, escuchar,
esquiar, dibujar, hablar, trabajar, estudiar, enseñar
For the “NOSOTROS/NOSOTRAS” form (to say what “we” do) after we drop the “AR” we add “AMOS”
Habl… + amos = hablamos (We talk)
Nosotros/nosotras hablamos
Let’s look at the verb list and conjugate all the AR verbs in the “Nosotros” form.
Bailar, practicar, nadar, usar, cantar, tocar, pasar tiempo, patinar, necesitar, escuchar,
esquiar, dibujar, hablar, trabajar, estudiar, enseñar
For the “VOSOTROS/VOSOTRAS” form (to say what “you guys” do) after we drop the “AR” we add “ÁIS”
Habl… + áis = habláis (You guys talk)
vosotros/vosotras habláis
Let’s look at the verb list and conjugate all the AR verbs in the “Vosotros” form.
Bailar, practicar, nadar, usar, cantar, tocar, pasar tiempo, patinar, necesitar, escuchar,
esquiar, dibujar, hablar, trabajar, estudiar, enseñar
For the “ELLOS, ELLAS, UDS.” forms (to say what “they” DO or “all of you-formal” DO) after we drop the “AR” we add “AN”
Habl… + an = hablan ellos hablan
(they/guys talk)
ellas hablan
(they/gals talk)
Uds. hablan
(you plural talk)
• Do not think that just because the Uds. form is conjugated like the “ellos, ellas” forms that it all of a sudden means “they”.
• Just because “Uds.” means you plural… it cannot be conjugated like the “vosotros” form of the verbs. Nor should you confuse it with “tú or Ud.”
Let’s look at the verb list and conjugate all the AR verbs in the “ellos, ellas, Uds.” forms.
Bailar, practicar, nadar, usar, cantar, tocar,
pasar tiempo, patinar, necesitar, escuchar,
esquiar, dibujar, hablar, trabajar, estudiar,
enseñar
