2 TAKING A STAR READING TEST

The next diagram shows the student view after logging in.

There are two areas that can be accessed from this page, Accelerated Reader and Star Reading.

Students must not take the STAR Reading Test at home as it will affect the student’s overall results.

To take a Star Reading test, click on the “STAR Reading” icon.

[pic]

Click on the “Start” button to take the test.

[pic]

Please note that students may use the keyboard or the mouse when selecting their answers.

3 ASSESSING STAR READING REPORTS

Once the test has been completed the teacher will print individual “Diagnostic Reports” for each pupil.

To assess the student’s reading ability, take note of the following:

• Scaled Score (SS)

• Grade Equivalent (GE)

• Instructional Reading Level (IRL)

|Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) or Reading Range | |

| | |

| |ZPD (Reading Range) |

Below is a summary of how the scores are derived at and how to interpret the results of the test.

STAR Reading scores present a "snapshot" of achievement at a specific point in time. As with any test, it is important to remember that many

factors can affect a student's test scores.

Scaled Score (SS)

The Scaled Score is the most fundamental score produced by STAR Reading tests. It ranges from 0 to 1400 and spans grades 1 through 12. It is

calculated based on the difficulty of the questions and the number of correct responses. Scaled Scores are useful for comparing student

performance over time and across grades. In STAR Reading tests, all other norm-referenced scores are derived from the Scaled Score.

Grade Equivalent (GE)

Grade Equivalent scores range from 0.0 to 12.9+. They represent how a student's test performance compares with that of other students

nationally. For example, if a Primary 4 student has a GE of 5.6, his or her score is equal to that of a typical Primary 5 student after the

sixth month of the school year. This score does not necessarily mean that the student is capable of reading Primary 5 material. It only

indicates that his or her reading skills are well above average for his or her grade level.

Instructional Reading Level (IRL)

The Instructional Reading Level is the grade level at which a student is at least 80% proficient at recognizing words and comprehending reading

material with assistance. IRL scores are Pre-Primer (PP), Primer (P), 1 through 12, Post-High School (PHS). If a Primary 3 student has an IRL

of 4, he or she reads Primary 4 words and books with 80% accuracy or better.

Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD or Reading Range)

The Zone of Proximal Development defines the reading level range from which a student should be selecting books for optimal growth in reading

without frustration.

The ZPD is especially useful for students using the Accelerated Reader™ reading management system, which provides readability levels on all

books included in the system. The ZPD, however, is approximate. Success at any reading level also depends on the student's interest and prior

knowledge of a book's content.

Teachers should use their professional judgment to adjust the level of books read to match an individual student's needs and interests.

4. ACCESSING ACCELERATED READER (Student portal)

After the student has read a book which has an associated quiz within the system, they log in and click on the “Accelerated Reader” icon.

Students may take a quiz from home or any internet-connected computer.

[pic]

At the next page, there are three areas for the student to explore.

• Reading: where the students search for the required quiz

• Progress: shows students’ progress on points earned and certification

• Bookshelf: shows quizzes taken and results of those quizzes

4a. QUIZ: Searching For and Taking a Quiz

As an example, we will show how to search for a quiz using a key word.

We will search for “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” using the key word “Wimpy”.

The search will identify all the books with “Wimpy” in the title by:

Title

Author

Book Level

Select the correct book and click on “Take Quiz”.

[pic]

Indicate how the book was read then click on “Start Quiz”.

[pic]

Below is a sample of the quiz format.

Either the mouse or keyboard may be used when answering the questions.

[pic]

When the quiz is complete the student will be given the result of the quiz.

They can also print the TOPS Report which details the student’s progress so far.

[pic]

All the quizzes in the system have a point’s value.

To earn any points a student must achieve at least 60% correct and points will then be awarded on a pro-rated basis. For example, if you achieve 80% correct on a 5 point quiz, you will earn 4 points.

[pic]

4b) PROGRESS: Shows points earned, certification achieved and words learned.

[pic]

4c) BOOKSHELF: Shows quizzes taken, when taken and the results of those quizzes.

[pic]

Please note that students can only take a quiz once.

Retaking of quizzes is only allowed at the discretion of the teacher.

5 CERTIFICATION LEVELS AND CRITERIA

Reader certifications are milestones that recognise students’ reading achievements. The programme automatically tracks the student’s progress toward their goals and awards the certifications they achieve.

9. CERTIFICATION LEVELS

6 STUDENTS LOCKED OUT OF THE SYSTEM.

If a student enters a wrong user name or password three times, the system will lock them out.

The student needs to ask the teacher to unlock them otherwise they will be automatically unlocked after 24 hours.

7 MONITOR PASSWORD

If at any time the system asks for a monitor password, it is “admin”.

This will occur if the network connection is interrupted whilst taking a quiz or if the student logs off before completing the test and tries to re-enter the system.

8 AR APP RELEASED
