MY NAME: DEFINITION, ETYMOLOGY AND STORY Assignment may be hand written or typed. Be creative.Names have an interesting magic. Our name is a label we carry with us through life. For the most part they’re assigned by others, by history, by chance. But each of us has a choice in how we shape our names for others. And therein lies a story.Follow the following steps to compile information to use in your writing. 1) Research: Research books, the internet, or some other printed source and come up with at least 4-5 characteristics for the meanings and origin of your name.Etymology is the study of the origin of words and the way in which their meanings have changed throughout history.Even if your name is unusual or is ethnic, there are websites that give information on your name. For example, my daughter’s name is “Nia.” In Arabic it means “purpose” and in Irish it means “champion.”2) Interview: Investigate why you were given the name you have. What’s the story behind the choice of your name? Interview your parent(s). Ask them a variety of questions such as : When I was I named? If I was of the opposite sex, what would my name have been? What other choices were on the list? Which parent wanted my name more? Account, in great detail, the story of your naming. 3) Self – reflection: How you feel about your name. Do you feel that the meaning is reflective of your personality? Include a personal story or experience involving your name.4) WRITE TWO - THREE PARAGRAPHS ON THE MEANING AND ORIGIN OF YOUR NAME ANSWERING THE QUESTIONS OR RESEARCH ASKED ABOVE. *This should include a hook, transitions and conclusion.Questions to consider:-What do you like most and/or least about your name?-How many people in your family or in your life have the same name?-Were you named after someone specific? If so, does this affect how you are treated or how you are expected to act?5) WORKS CITED – Using Correct Documentation (“Works Cited”) You must use correct documentation of at least one interview and either an internet or book source correctly documented and put on a Works Cited Page in alphabetical order. 1.
