Declining Numbers of Bird Flu Cases

(XXX, Ky. – Month, day, 200X) ( The Kentucky Department for Public Health (DPH) reported a drop in the number of new bird flu cases this week. XXX [insert number, spelled out] new cases were confirmed this week, down from XXX [insert number] cases the previous week. As of today, Kentucky has XXX [insert number] confirmed cases of bird flu.

“Even though the number of cases is decreasing, the situation is still serious,” XXX [insert name and title] said. “Kentucky DPH will continue to monitor bird flu to prevent further spread of the disease. We also continue to urge everyone to keep taking precautions against bird flu.”

• Cover your cough and sneeze with a tissue or handkerchief.

• Clean your hands often, using soap and water or alcohol-based hand rubs.

When preparing food:

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.

• After handling raw meat or eggs, wash your hands, utensils, cutting boards, and countertops with hot, soapy water before they touch cooked or ready-to-eat foods.

• Do not place cooked meat back on the same plate or surface it was on before it was cooked.

• Thoroughly cook all foods containing poultry or eggs. Egg yolks should not be runny.

• Use a food thermometer to make sure poultry is heated to a safe temperature. All parts of the bird should reach at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit to kill bird flu virus.

• Wash whole eggs in soapy water before cracking open.

• Do not use raw or soft-boiled eggs in foods that will not be cooked.

• Do not eat uncooked or undercooked poultry or poultry products.
