DIVISION

Please answer on a separate sheet of paper. You may not use a calculator and you must show all your work to get credit.

1) Define division in your own words. You can also use an illustration.

2) Prove that division is the inverse (opposite) of multiplication.

3) It is often helpful to estimate an answer before carrying out the actual operation.

In division, it is most helpful to use compatible numbers such as

37 ÷ 1,654 becomes 40 ÷ 1600

Based on this example, what are compatible numbers?

4) Using compatible numbers, find the estimated answer to each of these

problems.

a) 23,143 ÷ 12 b) 2,552 ÷ 6

c) 53,350 ÷ 23 d) 26,720 ÷ 72

5) Suppose you had to do the problem 450 ÷ 30. How could you

change this problem so that it becomes a mental math problem?

6) When doing division with a one digit divisor, it is best to use short division.

Solve the following problems using short division. You may have remainders.

a) 552 ÷ 4 b) 67,663 ÷ 6

c) 3,376 ÷ 8 d) 49,307 ÷ 7

7) When doing division with two digit divisors, it is best to first find the

estimated answer using either compatible numbers or rounding and then

do the actual problem. The estimated answer gives you both a clue as

to where to begin to solve the problem and a reference to check your final

answer against. You may use either remainders or decimals.

a) 848 ÷ 53 b) 3145 ÷ 74

c) 3,156 ÷ 32 d) 8,943 ÷ 12

8) Sarah was in a hurry to do her math. She divided 3,048 by 6 and

got an answer of 58? She knew her answer didn’t make sense, but she

could not figure out where she went wrong. Please help her.

9) Answer the following word problems. If the problems involves money there

is usually a decimal remainder. If it does not, you need to decided whether the

remainder is important or not and how whether it should be represented as

a whole number or a decimal (part of a number).

a) CA decided that the students were all working too hard and that they

needed a nice trip on the Bosporus. If there are 423 students and

teachers in the school and each bus has a maximum capacity of 22,

how many buses does the school need to reserve?

b) The sixth grade raised a total of $175. If all 28 students raised the

same amount, how much did each student raise?

c) I have 12 meters of beautiful and valuable silk. I would like to make

scarves out of it for my 5 nieces. How long can each scarf be?

d) If there are l75 M & Ms in a bag and there are 4 friends, how many

M & Ms does each friend get?

e) I was trying to keep track of the mileage on my new car. I was able

to drive l24 kilometers on 8 liters of gas. How many kilometers was

I able to driver per liter?

10) Write and solve a story problem for 345 divided by 9 in which the remainder is not

important.

11) Write and solve a story problem for 345 divided by 9 in which the remainder is

important.
