If you go straight through the content with minimal interactivity then it will take about 30 min.The Discussion Questions are optional but recommended. Including the discussion questions may add 15-20 min. There are some Optional Activities identified, which ask the participants to write about their own stories. These will add about 10 min.][Facilitator: Welcome everyone, open with the Serenity Prayer, briefly introduce yourself (noting your relationship to H&I Service), ask everyone to introduce themselves, and read the Purpose for Today.]Purpose for TodaySection: 5 minutesThe purpose of this orientation is to acquaint all current and potential H&I speakers and shadowers with the policies relevant to an H&I Presentation. It has been formatted as a training workshop in order to provide basic training on what to expect at an H&I Presentation, how to conduct yourself in an H&I Facility and provide tips and suggestions on how to share your message of recovery or your Experience, Strength and Hope. Each participant will each receive a package at the end with take home materials from this session as well as a short quiz and a sign up form for the speaker database which you will be invited to fill out and hand in at the end of this training session.[Ask participants to read one or two paragraphs each]What is H&I?The purpose of the Hospitals & Institutions Committee is to carry our message of recovery to addicts who have limited access to regular Narcotics Anonymous meetings. Our core message is that an addict, any addict, can stop using drugs, lose the desire to use and find a new way of life. This is accomplished through the operation of Panels that visit facilities on a regular basis. These panels are made up of a Panel Leader and a small number of additional Panel Members (Speakers and Shadowers). We call these meetings “Presentations”, to remind ourselves that they differ from regular NA meetings in several important ways. What is an H&I Presentation?H&I Presentations simply introduce the basics of the NA Program using the speaker presentation format. In a speaker presentation, one or more NA members share their experience, strength, and hope. That tends to lay out some basic symptoms and characteristics of the disease, and shows how NA has brought about recovery. Open sharing types of meetings are not used in the H&I setting as they tend to lend themselves to an atmosphere which is inappropriate or unruly in an early recovery setting. It is important that the H&I panel maintain control and a sense of calm throughout the presentation. Shadowers must have three (3) months clean before attending an H&I presentation and speakers must have (6) months clean - without the use of drug replacement therapy. It is not important whether or not we have been in a similar facility ourselves. Anyone with a clear and consistent Narcotics Anonymous message, who is willing to share it, is well suited for H&I work.[Interject at this point that if anyone present does not yet have the clean time requirements and does not wish to stay for the rest of the training, then they are welcome to exit the training session at this time. Everyone is welcome to stay, however, irrespective of clean time. We simply want to be respectful of their time.]All H&I presentations are closed to outside participation. NA members from the outside should attend the meeting only when invited by the panel leader. The only people to attend H&I presentations are the panel leader, speakers and shadowers. At the end of the presentation there will usually be a question and answer period. Sometimes the residents will have questions about other treatment facilities or other fellowships, about certain medications they are on or about their relationships with other people. It is important to remember that when doing H&I Service, we carry only “A Message of Recovery in Narcotics Anonymous”. We have no opinion on anything else. We may not have all the answers to their questions, but we can always convey a feeling of acceptance and interest in the person who asked. That may do more than the information contained in our answers.Optional Discussion: In which ways do H&I Presentations differ from regular NA meetings?[If time permits, allow for 1 or 2 minutes of open discussion. Emphasize that H&I Presentations are by invitation only, have clean time requirements, and do not provide residents an opportunity to share. They have a single purpose: to carry the NA message of Recovery.][Continue to have participants take turns reading one or two paragraphs.]Types of FacilitiesSection: 3 minutesIn our area we do H&I work in three types of facilities. Each facility is different, with different policies and procedures. It is important that we respect the rules of the facilities we visit.Withdrawal Management Centres (Detox)Addicts in detox centres are in the earliest stage of recovery. Some facilities provide interim care for addicts who are waiting to go to a treatment facility and the residents may therefore remain in the detox for a few weeks. Others are short term with a maximum stay of three to seven days.Detention Centres (Jail)Detention Centres have many additional requirements of which H&I volunteers must be aware. NA members that volunteer at the jail must be approved by the facility ahead of time. Because of the extra effort to become an H&I volunteer at the jail it is preferable for the volunteer to be able to make a long term commitment.Treatment Centres (Rehab)Treatment Centres help addicts enter recovery after they have already been through withdrawal. Treatment programs typically last 3 to 6 weeks but can be longer. These centres have different philosophies and approaches. Some strongly advocate 12-step fellowships, while others present 12-step fellowships as one of several options. Addicts in rehab typically must adhere to a strict program while they are in treatment. They might have limited access to the outside world; for example they may not be allowed to leave the facility and they may be deprived of their cell phones.About Drug Replacement TherapyIt is important to note that those in facilities may be working with a doctor on medically supported means of withdrawal such as harm reduction or drug replacement therapy. While NA has no opinion on outside issues, we do have an opinion on how DRT plays into our program and that is as follows: In Narcotics Anonymous, we welcome and support any addict who wants to stop using, this includes addicts who come to meetings on Drug Replacement Therapy (DRT) such as methadone and suboxone. By definition, medically assisted therapy indicates that medication is being given to people to treat addiction, whereas NA is a program of complete abstinence. The only requirement for NA membership is the desire to stop using. We are an abstinence based program that treats addiction with the application of spiritual principles. NA has no opinions about DRT or the practices of organizations or practitioners outside NA. [Continue to have participants take turns reading one or two paragraphs.]How To Do Service in H&ISection: 3 minutesH&I Service is very rewarding and luckily there are many ways to get involved. If you are interested in doing service at any level the easiest way to get started is simply to attend a monthly meeting of the H&I Committee. [Facilitator should now indicate where and when the next meeting is happening.]The group of NA members who participate in the H&I Presentation is called a “Panel”. Before you participate as a Panel Member in an H&I Presentation there are three roles that you should be aware of: Panel Leader, Speaker, and Shadower. Panel LeaderThere is a Panel Leader assigned to each facility. The Panel Leader has sole accountability for all H&I Service at their facility; therefore it is very important to keep them informed and to follow their direction at all times.Panel Leaders invite Speakers and Shadowers, chair the meeting and determine the format of the presentation.SpeakerSpeakers are Panel Members who take an active role in the presentation by sharing. To be a Speaker: You must be clean for 6 months, including from drug replacement therapyIt is suggested that you have an NA sponsor and it is advised that you have worked or are currently working the stepsYou should be confident that you will be able to attend the presentation, and that you will not need to cancelYou should be independent of the facility (e.g. you should not knowingly attend the facility if you are affiliated with any current resident). ShadowerShadowers are Panel Members who participate in the presentation without sharing. A shadower is there to observe, but may also participate by reading part of the preamble or by briefly introducing themselves to the residents. The presence of Shadowers at a presentation, especially those in early recovery, can be a great source of inspiration and hope to those attending the presentation. It is also an excellent way to become familiar with H&I if you think you may want to speak at a presentation but you are still a little unsure. To be a Shadower:You must be clean for 3 months, including from drug replacement therapyYou should be working the NA programYou should be independent of the facility Suggestions for all Panel MembersSection: 2:30 minutesWhen doing H&I Service we represent NA, so we must act so as never to tarnish NA’s reputation. Everyone who participates in the H&I Presentation should keep the following suggestions in mind:Honour your commitmentCheck in with your sponsor before volunteering. Your sponsor can help you check your motives and expectations. Arrive on time. When Panel members are late or don’t show up at all it can result in cancellation of the H&I presentation altogether.Respect the role of the panel leaderGive the Panel Leader at least 48 hours notice if you need to cancel. Your help to find a replacement is appreciated, but always coordinate with and defer decisions to the Panel Leader. Only the Panel Leader may invite people to join the panel. If you want to bring someone with you, clear it through the Panel Leader first. Follow the Panel Leader’s direction, they have sole accountability for H&I at the facility.Be aware of how you conduct yourself in the facilitiesAvoid excessive swearing, graphic descriptions of drug use and don’t wear anything that may be considered provocative or triggering (such as shirts with beer logos, or in some facilities, even camouflage or sports team branding).Offer no opinion on outside issues. Even if you have a strong personal opinion, if it is a topic on which NA officially has no opinion then while doing H&I Service it is important to represent NA’s position and not your own.Do not engage in discussion with the residents about the facility's rules, conditions, or staff. These are outside issues and discussing them with residents could affect our relationship with the facility. Do not bring items or messages into or out of the facility. Some items may not be allowed in the facility (e.g. cigarettes, outside food, candy, gum) and the list of contraband can seem arbitrary. It is best to carry nothing with you. Be aware of how you interact with clients in the facilitiesNever give out personal contact information. Encourage them instead to attend an NA meeting in the community as soon as they are released. Show them our local meeting list if they are from the area.Do not offer to sponsor a resident. To do so would exceed H&I’s mandate. Don’t flirt or act in a way that could be misinterpreted. Respect the residents’ personal boundaries. For example, not everyone is comfortable being hugged. Also we should not ask personal questions that are none of our business, such as why someone has been institutionalized.[Facilitator states that we are now starting the speaker training portion of the workshop. They should hand out the packages and inform participants that the information in the workshop is all available in the packages. The Facilitator should read the following sections.]Training Workshop Section: 5 minutesIn H&I we are carrying the message into the facility. At an H&I presentation we are not there to dump our problems, but rather to help these addicts become aware of what NA is and how it works in our lives. In effect, an H&I presentation is an introduction to our fellowship for addicts. Often you will hear people in the program refer to speaking as sharing our experience, strength and hope. While our stories are entirely unique to us, in H&I we have some tips and suggestions that will help you ensure that, in sharing your experience, strength and hope, you are also helping to spread the NA message of recovery.Experience, Strength and Hope Explained [Ask the participants what they think “Experience” means. Collect 1 or 2 responses, then read the following answer.]Experience: What life was like before Narcotics Anonymous. You might talk about your youth or family life, your first obsessive and compulsive behaviours, your first memories of using, when you realized you were an addict, the feelings that you experienced when using, how you felt about yourself, the pain of using against your will, how the disease progressed, the things you lost. Ultimately, you are identifying with the insanity and the unmanageability of living in addiction. [Optional Activity: Ask each participant to write down their Experience in no more than 1 or 2 sentences. Ask a couple of participants to share their answers.][Ask the participants what they think “Strength” means. Collect 1 or 2 responses, then read the following answer.]Strength: The events or decisions that brought you to Narcotics AnonymousWe all have that moment of desperation, the rock bottom or series of events that brought us into the rooms of NA. Maybe you’ve heard it called the “gift of desperation” or heard it said that our rock bottom is the place we decided to stop digging. Your strength is the act of coming to the rooms and asking for help, then staying in the program even when life in recovery was hard. You might talk about your experience at your first meeting, your first act of surrender, the feeling of living just for today.[Optional Activity: Ask each participant to write down their Strength in no more than 1 or 2 sentences. Ask a couple of participants to share their answers.][Ask the participants what they think “Hope” means. Collect 1 or 2 responses, then read the following answer.]Hope: What life’s been like for you since getting cleanFor many in early recovery, just staying clean can seem impossible. By sharing about your NA program of recovery and how your life has changed as a result of it, you are spreading hope! You can talk about your experience staying clean in early recovery, 90 meetings in 90 days, finding a sponsor and a home group, connecting with the literature, connecting with a higher power, working the steps, finding self acceptance, the gifts you’ve received, how your thinking has changed, how you approach challenges and difficult feelings in recovery. How today, because of NA, you don’t have to use no matter what is going on in your life and that is true freedom.[Optional Activity: Ask each participant to write down their Hope in no more than 1 or 2 sentences. Ask a couple of participants to share their answers.][Facilitator reads.]Try to remember that a narrative of events isn’t as impactful as sharing about feelings, self-image, turning points, or new awareness. These carry a powerful message of recovery.Suggested Topics (OPTIONAL SECTION)Section: 3 minutes[. Draw attention to the list of suggested topics in the handouts. Ask them to take a quick look and ask if any of the suggested topics resonate with anyone. Remind them that this list is an excellent resource to review when you plan to speak for H&I.][Optional Activity: Ask participants to brainstorm topics that could be the basis for effective sharing at an H&I Presentation. After ideas stop flowing, share the ones from the following list that have not yet been mentioned. ]It is important that you tell your own story and that it is genuine. If you are looking for some inspiration of what aspects of your story to tell, consider these ideas:H.O.W (honesty, open mindedness and willingness)H.A.L.T (hungry, angry, lonely, tired)Giving up old People, Places and Things for new People, Places and ThingsSurrenderAcceptanceOur responsibility for our own recoveryThe benefits of freedom from active addictionIdentifying with the still suffering addict rather than comparingHow NA is a spiritual not a religious programTools of the fellowship that you have applied in your life and recoveryLetting goManaging your feelingsLearning to trust others, your sponsor and your Higher PowerThe first three stepsLiving just for today[Ask 1-2 participants to share which topics resonated the most with them.]Suggestions for SpeakingSection: 1 minuteThese are suggestions to keep in mind when you speak at an H&I Presentation:Include our core message: that any addict can stop using, lose the desire to use, and find a new way to live. Use the language of NA (“Addict”, “Clean time”, “Recovery”). Don’t be drug-specific. Reference only NA literature. If your experience involves participation in other fellowships use discretion to ensure that you represent NA in as clear a manner as possible.Use “I” statements. We are there to tell our own story and not to give advice. We don’t want residents to feel they are being preached at.Share about your life in active addiction a little, but not too much. We want the participants to identify with us, but once that is accomplished it is best to carry a clear message of recovery.Emphasize that it is important to follow suggestions, including: 90 meetings in 90 days, get a home group, find a sponsor, avoid relationships in early recoveryTell them that there is fun in recovery (e.g. social events, fellowship, conventions)Encourage them to attend a meeting the first day they are released.Optional Discussion: How is speaking at an H&I Presentation different from sharing at a meeting?[If time permits, allow for 1 or 2 minutes of open discussion. Emphasize that when doing H&I Service there is only one purpose: to share the NA message of recovery. Speaking through H&I is about giving, not taking.]Do’s & Don’tsSection: 2 minutes[To be read aloud by the group and discussed or used as a handout if short on time. It could also be used as an interactive quiz where you ask the participants to call out Do’s and Don’ts they learned in the session and check them off the list, calling out any that were missed.]Do... It could also be read aloud, answered and discussed so that the orientation participants learn the rationale for the correct way to handle each situation. The correct answer is highlighted in bold.][When printing for handouts, remember to unbold the correct answer and remove the comments in (parentheses).]You have been asked to speak at an H&I presentation, but you are the only person to arrive on time and you can not reach the panel leader on the phone. What do you do?Wait outside for the panel leader to arrive. Get everything set up in the meeting room and wait until someone else arrives. Until then engage only in informal communication with the residents. Tell the facility that the presentation is canceled.Start the presentation. The message of NA is too important not to take advantage of a chance to share it.(The panel leader, or their delegate, is the only person who can start an H&I presentation)You have been asked to speak at an H&I presentation, but the night before you start to feel ill. What do you do?Go regardless. The message of NA is too important not to take advantage of a chance to share it.Ask a friend in NA to cover for you.Wait to see if you feel rm the panel leader of the possibility that you won’t be able to attend.(Always keep the Panel Leader informed so they can make backup plans.)A friend at your home group expressed an interest in H&I and asked if they can go with you when you speak at the detox. What do you tell them?Invite them to come along, but tell them they can only observe and not participate.Refer them to the H&I Committee so their name can be added to the H&I panel member database.Refer them to the Panel Leader for the rm them that they must attend H&I training before participating in H&I.(The Panel Leader may choose to follow up with training or by adding them to the database. Never invite someone to attend a presentation on your own.)After the presentation you start a conversation with some of the facility residents. One of them asks if they can get a cigarette from you. What do you do?Give the cigarette.Don’t give the cigarette. (Some facilities prohibit their clients from using tobacco, and may not even allow tobacco products on the premises. Sharing a cigarette could get them in trouble and could jeopardize our ability to continue at the facility. )You are a speaker and during the Q&A, a resident of the facility starts to talk about their experience and is drug-specific. What do you do?Correct them and ask them not to be drug-specificLet them know that the meeting format is not a sharing meeting, but that you would be happy to talk with them after the presentation.Let them speak.. Sometimes it is important to allow the people attending the presentation to get things off their chest.Do nothing. (It is the Panel Leader’s job to handle this situation.)Someone at the presentation asks you to look up something for them on your phone. What do you do?Help them out if it seems reasonable. We want them to think that people in NA are friendly. Unlock your phone and pass it over to them. Decline to help them because it is against policy. Avoid this situation altogether by keeping your phone off and out of sight while in the facility. (It is best to keep phones hidden away so they are not a distraction. The facility might carefully control internet and phone access for clients and it would be against the rules for them to use your phone. Also, it may be seen as rude to use a phone in front of people who have had to surrender their own phones for a long period of time.)After the presentation someone asks if they can be a member of NA and continue to use drug replacement therapy or doctor-prescribed marijuana. What do you tell them?Tell them “Yes”, because it is ok as long as it is prescribed by a doctorTell them “No”, because NA is a program of complete abstinence from all drugs.Tell them “Yes”, but inform them that they can’t participate fully in the program.Tell them “Yes”, any addict with the desire to stop using is welcome and supported in NA.TORONTO AREA H&I COMMITTEE SPEAKER DATABASE SIGN UP SHEETVOLUNTEER INFORMATION Please print.
