Donna Andersen

Author and Expert on Sociopaths in the Community

Donna Andersen is the author of , a website and blog that teaches people how to recognize and recover from sociopaths. She is also author Red Flags of Love Fraud—10 signs you’re dating a sociopath, and the accompanying Red Flags of Love Fraud Workbook.

Andersen learned about sociopaths the hard way—by marrying one. James Alwyn Montgomery, originally of Sydney, Australia, met her and quickly proposed in 1996. In two-and-a-half years, Montgomery defrauded her out of $227,000, cheated with at least six women, fathered a child with one of them, and then, 10 days after Andersen left him, married the mother of the child. It was the second time he committed bigamy. She tells the whole outrageous story in her first book called Love Fraud—How marriage to a sociopath fulfilled my spiritual plan.

This man had no conscience, no empathy and lied prolifically—which Andersen learned, far too late, were the cardinal signs of a sociopath. In 2005, Andersen launched to educate the public about this destructive personality disorder. Her website now receives 1,000 to 2,000 visits every day, and is considered the best source on the Internet about relationships with sociopaths. Andersen has collected more than 3,300 cases of people targeted by sociopaths. Through them, she has acquired a thorough knowledge of how sociopaths behave in the community, rather than in prison, which is where most of these disordered individual are studied.

Along with the website, Andersen founded the Lovefraud Blog. The blog has more than 1,700 articles—nearly 500 written by Andersen—and more than 170,000 comments. As people discuss their own run-ins with sociopaths, the blog has evolved into a healing community of survivors. Andersen receives many emails thanking Lovefraud for saving their lives.

Andersen now works to educate young people about social predators, speaking to college and high school students on Love Fraud and How to Avoid It. Her objective is to teach students the Red Flags of Love Fraud, so they can escape destructive relationships before too much damage is done.

Andersen’s prior career in journalism, advertising and marketing communications helped her to create an effective website. She graduated summa cum laude from Syracuse University with degrees in magazine journalism and psychology in 1978. Her first job was as the original editor of Atlantic City Magazine. In 1983, she founded Donna Andersen Copywriting, a boutique advertising agency.
