Ch 9 – Extending Perimeter, Circumference, and Area

Ch 9 – Extending Perimeter, Circumference, and Area

According to Holt Guidelines, the only lesson that match with state standards are 9-4 and 9-5

Are You Ready, p. 585 is a good review (especially #15 – 18)

Connecting Algebra to Geometry, p. 588:  good practice solving for a variable

9-1:  Holt says that it does not align with State Standards specifically, however, we think this lesson should be taught

This lesson has all the Area formulas for triangles and other quadrilaterals.  We would go through the lesson and introduce the formulas and have them apply them, as in the examples.

Think and Discuss, p. 593, has a good way to organize formulas

Should take 1 – 55 min class period

9-2 Geometry Lab:  Developing Pi

Like Activity 1 to show where 3.14 comes from, but might want to use different size cylinders (like soda cans, soup cans, etc) so that measuring the circumference is easier.  Rest of Lab does not seem worth the time.

9-2:  Holt says that it does not align with State Standards, however, it matches with 3.g

Motivate might be good to do as a whole class demonstration (prepare ahead of time)

Reaching All Learners – if you set up the Motivate, could use the same demonstration for this activity

Should take 1 – 55 min class period

9-3:  Holt says that it does not align with State Standards, however, we feel that this lesson is very important and has been traditionally tested on the WASL.  Loosely falls under Standard G.6 and G.7

Exploration is good as well as Motivate (do one or the other)

Should take 1 – 55 min class period

9-3 Geometry Lab:  May be good to do with advanced students (extension activity as time allows)

Multi-Step Test Prep, p. 614 – Very Good!

9-1 to 9-3 Quiz

9-4:  standard 4.c

Review slope formula (in Warm-Up)

Exploration is good

Should take 2 – 55 min class periods

9-5:  standard 6.d

Exploration is really good

Good summary box on p. 623

Should take 2 – 55 min class periods

9-6:  Not needed for new State Standards, however, students taking the HSPE this year.

9-4 to 9-5 Quiz
