Area refers to the amount of space inside a 2-D object and is measured in units squared.

Surface Area is the amount of space on the outside of a 3-D figure (its covering) and is measured in units squared.

Volume is the amount that a 3-D figure can contain and is measured in units cubed.

In the Volume and Surface Area formulas, B stands for the area of the base.

In the Volume and Surface Area formulas, p stands for the perimeter of the base and l stands for the slant height.

Perimeter and Area: Find the perimeter or area of the shape. Copy the formula, substitute carefully, and solve correctly. Don’t forget to label your answer!

1) Find the circumference of a circle with a diameter of 9 inches.

2) You have a large tree in your front yard. At noon, the tree casts a circular shadow with a radius of 9 m. You are now planting a tree in your back yard. At noon, its shadow will have a radius of 4 m. How much of your yard is shaded by the two trees at noon?

Volume and Surface Area: Find the volume or surface area of the shape. Copy the formula, substitute carefully, and solve correctly. Don’t forget to label your answer!

3) Find the volume of the cylinder.

4) Find the Surface Area of the cylinder.
