Argumentative Vocabulary

Central Idea

The main concept about a topic that a writer conveys.

Entire pieces of writing can be based around a central idea, and so can individual paragraphs.

Ex: The central idea of your entire research paper may have been deforestation, but the central idea of one paragraph may have been about how mining affects deforestation.

Details

Details support the central idea of your paper by providing facts, statistics, or quotations from experts to help prove your central idea.

Statistic

Information that deals with numbers.

"Already on average, two people die every day across the USA in vehicles driven by 16-year-old drivers."

Note: Statistics do not automatically mean that something is "true." People can reword statistics to suit their agendas/biases, so be careful!

Argument

The argument is the main point on which the writer will develop his or her work in order to convince readers.
