Course Description: In this course we will integrate the different domains of Language Arts (Reading, writing, speaking, grammar, etc.) through the development of basic skills and critical thinking. The course will cover the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards () and prepare students for the new Georgia Milestones Assessment. Each semester is divided into 9 week units during which students will learn, practice, and master skills and knowledge that will allow them not only to succeed in Language Arts, but also to see how the subject relates to their life and the world around them.

Curriculum Overview -This is only a guide and is subject to change.

CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

Reading: Students will be reading short poems and longer novels. We will start with To Kill a Mockingbird

Students are responsible for acquiring their own copies of the novels teachers request; however, they are encouraged to let teachers know of any situations that

would make it difficult to acquire their own copy

Writing: Students will write on a weekly basis, focusing on argumentative essays, with particular use of the website Kidblog. Students will also be assigned

narrative writing, starting with poetry.

Language: Students will study the conditional and subjunctive moods, as well as how to incorporate quotations when citing evidence in non-fiction or using dialogue

in fiction

Speaking and Listening: Students will participate in classroom discussions, debates, and seminars, as well as presentations to the class of their work. The final

project will entail a presentation to the class.

Dear parents and guardians,

I am excited for another great semester with your child in my 8th grade Language Arts class. In an effort to conserve paper, the 8C Language Arts syllabus is posted online. You can find mine on my Dekalb County website, . Once you have read the syllabus, please sign the attached document and send it in with your child to return to me.

In early February, we will begin reading To Kill a Mockingbird. Please ensure that your child has a copy by February 3, and let me know in advance if there is any reason why they will not be able to acquire their own copy.

Unit 3 will focus most on Argumentative writing, using a secure website called for students to post their opinions. As part of argumentative writing, we may touch on controversial topics, including the Black Lives Matter Movement, LGBT rights, Immigration Reform, The Keystone Pipeline, etc. Please let me know in advance if you are uncomfortable with your child being a part of any of these conversations and I will find an alternative.

Thank you and I look forward to an exciting new year,

Amy Lou Brouner
