CampoTABLE OF CONTENTS1Table of Contents2Rationale 3Abstract4-17 The Lightning Thief questions 1-5818-29Bud, Not Buddy questions 1- 49AbstractThis Curriculum Area Project focuses on creating text-dependent questions for the 6th Grade Modules #1 and 2A, centered on the books The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan and Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Curtis. The text-dependent questions were designed to align to the related NYSCC standard(s). As noted in the question, the standard that the question addresses appears in parenthesis. The standards addressed within this curriculum area project include, but are not limited to: RL.6.1 to RL.6.9.This CAP will provide the students with higher level thinking questions and better prepare them for future success. RationaleThe rationale for this CAP is based on the New York State Common Core Standards for the 6th grade English Language Arts curriculum. The Common Core topics are organized into modules that have the rigor necessary to succeed on the New York State ELA Assessment. In recent years, there have been significant shifts within education in New York State. As our district has committed to adapting to the NYS Common Core Standards, we have adjusted our curriculum to align with these standards. Within the ELA curriculum our means of traveling towards the road to success in this area has been through the implementation of modules in the classroom. The modules serve as a vehicle to guide our children through the standards with tasks and activities which instill “college ready” skills. During the 2014 - 2015 school year, our school district implemented The Lightning Thief and Bud, Not Buddy module (Module 1 and 2A) for the first time. The rich and extensive content of these books provides an opportunity to provide many text dependent questions that will enhance our students’ grasp and comprehension of questions of this type. These text-dependent questions range in difficulty and require a wide variety of skills to answer. As these two books/modules lead into test preparation for the NYS assessment, mastery of such text-dependent questions will be a useful source of preparation. Teachers can use these questions in a myriad of ways, such as homework, quizzes, exit cards, do-now activities, group activities, and as formal assessments.
