APRIL 2011

SMALLBORE

The March Small Bore Match was canceled due to lack of participation. The April Match will be a 60 shot match, and the cost is $15.00 for adults and $5.00 for juniors. Our next match is April 9th will be a 600 point prone event. As always, show up at 8:00 to set up targets and start the match at 9:00. The next match after that will be May 14th.

The TSRA State Prone Championship will be at Hidden Falls Sports Park east of Marble Falls on 1431 on Sat. and Sun. May 14-15. Those who are interested may contact Wayne Nunn at wsnunn@. These folks put on a good match on their new range.

HIGHPOWER RIFLE

Fifteen competitors hauled out their “US Rifle Cal.30 M1” rifles to participate in the March John C. Garand Match at CTSA Range. We started out with a nice, overcast day, but those pesky Texas winds were gusty by the second relay, making for a tough standing position score…all that wood and metal swaying in the wind. Winner of the match was Leonard Trevino with a 262-1X. Jon Ussery was second with a 261-2X, and Eric Johnson was third with a 253-1X. In the bench/match rifle category, Wayne Nunn had a 265-0X, Alex Bennett had a 254-1X, and Bob Hammond had a 250-0X.

The next Match is a “Fun Match” scheduled for Sunday, April 17, 2011 at CTSA Range, New Braunfels, Texas.  Course of fire is the standard 50 round national match course (using your ammunition this time).  Match fee is $20 for adults and $10 for juniors. (BTW price of CMP .30-06 ammo is going up.)

PISTOL

At the request of the participants the March Outdoor Pistol Tournament was a 1200 point event. We did not fire the .45 match. There were five shooters for the .22 match but only three for the center-fire match (Alex Bennett developed pistol problems and could not continue). Unfortunately five of our regular shooters were out of town for this tournament. Robert Maxon was the overall high shooter with 1009-14X followed by Michael Ginesi with 868-8X. George Becquet did not fire the center-fire, but he did manage a 495-4X in the .22 match. Not bad for an old-hand pistol shooter!

The next tournament will be April 10th at Blackhawk.  Arrive at 08:15 to help set up and sign in.  Shooting starts at 09:00. For details check .

RIMFIRE F-CLASS

We had four F Class shooters (a small turn out) at our March, but fun was had by all. Carter Mayfield shot a fantastic 450-31x, Bill Huddleston came in second with a 433- 20x. These matches are really just good time shoots. Bring any .22 LR rifle with a scope and join in the fun. You’ll learn a lot trying to hit those little targets at 100 yards…in the wind…and the mirage. Shooting this way makes a squirrel or a turtle or a prairie dog look large.

Come on out April 16th for our next match. Arrive at 08:15 to help set up and sign in.  Shooting starts at 09:00.

RAFFLE RIFLE

Our next raffle rifle will be an AR15/M4 carbine equipped with the following goodies

Rock River ARMS (RRA), LAR-15 M-4 CAR "ENTRY OPERATOR MODEL", 16 inch

barrel, 1:9 twist, chrome lined bore and chrome lined chamber, flip-up front

and rear sights with additional optic "Rotech Model 512 Red-Dot” sight.

The stock is a six position CAR stock, hand guard is the RRA quad-rail equipped

with a forward vertical hand grip, Harris bipod, and Picatinny rail-bipod

attachment. Retail cost of rifle and accessories is over $2,100.

We usually set up a table at the gun shows and have someone there to sell the tickets. This “raffle table watch” is a good way for a couple of buddies to get into the show for free. All you have to do is make sure the table is manned continuously…all day. Call Shawn Taylor at 288-8431 if you would like to help.

Speaking of the gun show table, anyone who wants to help the STMTC scholarship fund can make donations to the organization in the form of firearms related items. Said “items” will be placed on the gun show table and when sold, the money will be placed in the scholarship fund. How’s that for a great way to get some of that excess loading junk…err…equipment. Some folks have donated brass, old dies, holsters, firearms parts, books, etc. It’s surprising what sells at guns shows. There are all kinds of people looking for odds and ends, and they frequently show up at gun shows. It’s the little stuff that sells…more likely than the guns themselves.

REMINGTON 513T SILENT AUCTION

The STMTC has some Remington 513T .22 target rifles that don’t see much use at any of our matches. To reduce the inventory we have been holding raffles for the 513Ts, but the problem is that most shooters are not into collecting these rifles and most target shooters want something more “modern”. So we tried to have a silent auction and bids were requested to be sent to me. Guess what! We got no bids! NONE!

Now this seems like a defeat, but actually it may be a blessing. We received a request last week from a gentleman, a school teacher, who has a group of kids who want to learn how to shoot. We’re going to help him and now it seems like the 513Ts have a new purpose in life. They are going to do what they were designed to do, train young folks how to shoot!

DEFENSIVE RIFLE (CARBINE) CLASS

STMTC will host an intermediate defensive rifle (carbine) class Saturday, 23 April 2011 at our facility on Blackhawk range. Total number of participants will be limited to 8 (eight). Total rounds required for the course of fire is 285, but it is recommended shooters bring 350 rounds, as this exercise is a beta test for a new lesson plan, and willing participants will continue to shoot if time remains. The event will last approximately 8 (eight) hours and a mealtime will be factored in. There are minimum equipment requirements including; at least two magazines, magazine pouch, sling, shooting mat and appropriate footgear. Limited “loaner” LBE (load bearing equipment) and mats are available. Contact Fredd Bergman at tactics@ to inquire and reserve your slot. Yes, we do have slots…bur only a couple, so don’t put it off!

VINTAGE RIFLE MATCH COMING

Are you ready for a little change-of-pace fun match with your vintage bolt action rifle? This match will by like no other you have ever shot, so it will be interesting to see how it goes. See the February Shot-Out for preliminary details. In short, all shooting will be from the standing position. The target will be two columns of letters looking a little like an eye chart the Doctor uses. You will load and when ready a letter will be called out by the range officer. You will have only a few seconds to find the letter and shoot a hole in it. The range will be 50 yards, and only turn-bolt rifle (rim-fire or center-fire) designed before 1946 will be allowed.

Bring your rifle of choice with at least 40 rounds of ammo to our Blackhawk range on Sunday, May 22nd. We will have detailed instructions and rules available soon and of course, we will explain everything on the range. Just remember…bolt action only…designed before 1946. Springfield ’03, M1917 Enfield, Mauser ’98, Arisaka, SMLE….or….how about a M37 Remington or a M52 Winchester. Anschutz-no, Ruger-no, your new Browning deer rifle-no. You get the point.
