| |In one page, compare a conflict from your life experience with one that appears in the play. |10 | |

| |What is similar? What is different? How did your conflict help you to understand the one in | | |

| |the play? (Individual) | | |

| |Choose an event from the play you find powerful. Write a personal reflection poem (of at |10 | |

| |least 14 lines of rhyming couplets with ten syllables a line) that expresses your feelings and| | |

| |Macbeth is a very solid example of a "tragic hero." As defined by Greek philosopher Aristotle.|20 | |

| |An Aristotelian tragic hero must have four characteristics: | | |

| |1) Nobleness (of a noble birth) or wisdom (by virtue of birth). | | |

| |2) Hamartia (translated as tragic flaw, somewhat related to hubris, but denoting excess in | | |

| |behavior or mistakes). | | |

| |3) A reversal of fortune (peripetia) brought about because of the hero's tragic error. | | |

| |4) The discovery or recognition that the reversal was brought about by the hero's own actions | | |

| |(anagnorisis). | | |

| |Provide a quotation from the play for each of the four characteristics of an Aristotelian | | |

| |tragic hero and explain how Macbeth fulfills that characteristic. For example, your typed or | | |

| |written page should read: | | |

| |1) In the beginning of the play, we learn that Macbeth is “…” This quotations shows … | | |

| |Design a front and back cover to a possible video game version of the play. The cover can be |10 | |

| |produced by hand or through the use of computer technology. Your must include an important | | |

| |quotation from the play on the front, and provide a minimum four sentence blurb on the back. | | |

| |Analyze the INNER CONFLICT of Macbeth by focusing on one of his soliloquies. Create a graphic|10 | |

| |chart to characterize and link the influences, drives, and beliefs that operate in his mind. | | |

| |Make a connection to behaviors and attitudes you see in your life that create similar | | |

| |conflicts. (Individual) | | |

| |Imagine that you know someone as ruthless and underhanded as Macbeth. You want to convince |10 | |

| |this person that his/her life will not be successful or happy if they continue to live this | | |

| |way. Use the Macbeths as your examples. Carefully argue both sides of the point and write a | | |

| |2 page paper that reflects your successful argument. (Individual) | | |

| |Write a newspaper or magazine article on a contemporary example of corruption. Write a |20 | |

| |personal response to this issue from the perspective of three different characters from | | |

| |Macbeth. Each response will be one page long. Include lines/words from the play that will | | |

| |convince me of that person’s perspective. (Individual) | | |

| |Write a short story regarding Macbeth and Lady Macbeth’s period of dating or marriage before |30 | |

| |the play began. You can write it in the first person or in the third person. The story | | |

| |should be at least three typed pages. Did Macbeth know Banquo and/or the witches in his early| | |

| |life? `(Individual) | | |

| |Trace at least three of the ironies that are found in the play. You may create a pictorial |10 | |

| |diagram to help explain these to the audience. (Individual) | | |

| |Choose one of Macbeth’s or Lady Macbeth’s soliloquies. Rewrite it for YOUR generation. There|10 | |

| |must be at least 20 lines in the speech you choose. (Individual) | | |

| |Define, as your “key word,” “integrity,” “courage,” or “honor” as you see it. Look though |20 | |

| |newspapers, websites, books, magazine, shows and movies for words, phrases, pictures, that | | |

| |develop your definition. Use your found poetry to define integrity. Offer a minimum of ten | | |

| |lines. On poster paper artistically draw or attach the letters of this poem and some images | | |

| |that represent the key word you have chosen. (Individual) | | |

| |OR | | |

| |You can take one quotation from the play and have it occupy a central part of the poster. |20 | |

| |Surrounding the quotation, provide a collage of images that relate, in some way to the | | |

| |quotation. (Individual) |20 | |

| |OR | | |

| |Draw the characters of Macbeth or Lady Macbeth, depicting the "true" characteristics through | | |

| |facial expression and body language. Provide an important quotation from the play from each | | |

| |character for each of your sketches. Sketch the witches including all the details provided | | |

| |by Shakespeare. If you do not draw you can present the above in the form of a collage of | | |

| |cut-outs from a magazine. (Individual) | | |

| |Imagine you are a casting director for a new version of the play to be set in our contemporary|20 | |

| |world. Write a letter to the film’s producer’s explaining which current film, television, or | | |

| |rock and roll starts you would like to cast in each of the play’s principal roles: Macbeth, | | |

| |Lady Macbeth, Banquo, Duncan, Malcolm, and Macduff. The letter should follow the proper | | |

| |format of a business letter (you will need to research proper format; you may make-up the | | |

| |names and addresses). And the letter should be typed and at least one full typed page in | | |

| |(approximately 1200 A.D.) or in Shakespeare’s time (1600 A.D.). Provide a poster presentation| | |

| |including text and image. Make sure to provide notice on the presentation as to where you | | |

| |found your information. (Individual) | | |

| |Design an information leaflet or information poster about witchcraft in Shakespeare’s day. |30 | |

| |Some questions to consider: | | |

| |1)What new witchcraft law did King James I introduce in 1604 and why was he particularly | | |

| |interested in witches? 2)What powers did people believe witches had? 3)Who were the North | | |

| |Berwick witches? 4) How were witches tortured in order to confess? 5)Who was Mary Sutton? | | |

| |Matthew Hopkins? And what was the Devil’s Mark? (Individual) | | |

| |OR | | |

| |It is possible that since Macbeth was a soldier, part of the reason he becomes insane is a | | |

| |result of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Design an information leaflet or information|30 | |

| |about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (the following site, though not the only one, will help).| | |

| |newspaper should be no less than four pages in length and include visual—but mostly text. I |30 | |

| |can help you with formatting the text for this project. (Group of no more than three) | | |

| |OR | | |

| |You can, with a total of four students, videotape a puppet theatre rendition of a scene from |30 | |

| |OR | | |

| |You can create and perform an Elizabethan commercial done in the language of Shakespeare. For |30 | |

| |example, develop a commercial for a detergent that removes even the most stubborn blood | | |

| |stains, complete with a testimonial from Lady Macbeth. The video must be in a format that can | | |

| |be viewed on the computer (Individual) | | |
