The community is situated in a small valley surrounded by rolling hills and mesas and offers a full range of basic services to residents. At an elevation of 6250 feet, Ganado has a mild climate yet experiences the change of seasons. Summers are moderate, with cool evening breezes, and winters have occasional snow fall. Majestic canyons, dense pine forests, and several lakes within short driving distance provide a variety of outdoor recreational activities, such as hiking, exploring, fishing, hunting, and cross country skiing. Downhill skiing opportunities exist at Sunrise and Snow Bowl in Arizona and Purgatory in Colorado, both within a four hours drive. Rodeos, concerts, and traditional Native America activities provide additional entertainment and cultural experiences contributing to the richness of like in Ganado. Sage Memorial Hospital and the Outpatient clinic provide medical/dental care. The Ganado Fire District provides fire protection and emergency medical response along with search and rescue service to the community and surrounding areas. Dine College and Navajo Technical University have campuses located within 30 miles and a variety of educational options, two of which are classes in the Navajo languages and Navajo culture. Many community colleges and universities offer classes online. The Gallup Independent and Navajo Times are delivered locally, and other state and national newspapers are available. Catholic, Baptist, Mormon, Presbyterian, and Native American churches are active in Ganado and other religious services are available in neighboring communities. In Ganado, several convenience stores, trading post, and gas stations offer consumer goods. Hubbells Trading Post, a national historic site is located in Ganado. Recently, Lowes Grocery store and Ace Hardware opened their doors in Burnside, AZ. Fast Food including Burger King and Pizza Edge are available in Burnside, approximately five (5) miles west of Ganado. Most residents make the drive, about 29 miles, to Window Rock for other services such as Internet and other routine shopping. Full shopping services are within easy driving distance at Gallup, about one hour, and Flagstaff, about two hours.DISTRICT OVERVIEWThe Ganado Unified School District provides educational services in four schools. The Primary School includes Pre-K through second grade, the Intermediate School, grades third through fifth, the Middle School, grades six, seven and eight, and the High School grades nine through twelve. One thousand three hundred and fifty students attend these four schools, and approximately 98 percent of the student body is Native American.Each school offers a comprehensive academic program emphasizing the development of traditional values and basic skills. Supplemental programs address the needs of students who require special services. At the primary and intermediate levels, special emphasis is placed on oral and written language development, self-esteem, and basic skills development. The middle school continues the process of basic skills development while offering a variety of elective courses and a balanced co-curricular program. The high school offers as extensive curriculum including college preparatory and career technical education courses to prepare students for college and the work force. A co-curricular program provides students with positive recreational experiences and the opportunity to develop leadership skills and social poise.At all levels, students have opportunities to study fine arts, physical education, and computer applications, library and media facilities are available in all the schools.
