Jefferson Scholars Foundation Scholarship

University of Virginia – BY NOMINATION

Who?

• High school seniors with exemplary academic qualifications and a passionate interest in attending the University of Virginia.

What Is This?

• Jefferson Scholars are selected on the basis of demonstrated excellence and exceptional potential in the areas of leadership, scholarship, and citizenship.

• Jefferson Scholars also are involved in a Challenge Discovery outdoor leadership and teamwork weekend, an Institute for Leadership and Citizenship, Foreign Travel Study, Alumni Internship Programs, Career Counseling, Public Service Fellows, and Enrichment Dinners and Receptions.

• The Jefferson Scholars program has always had as its primary purpose the goal of attracting the most promising and most talented students in the country.

Amount of Award?

• Intended to cover the entire cost of attendance for four years at the University of Virginia, the Jefferson Scholars Stipend includes tuition, fees, books, supplies, room, board, and personal expenses.

• Jefferson Scholars will also receive an extensive enrichment program, including study abroad experiences, which aims to support and nurture these students throughout their four years at the University of Virginia.

Qualifications?

• STUDENTS APPLYING FOR THIS SCHOLARSHIP ARE NOT ALLOWED TO APPLY TO ANY OTHER UNIVERSITY “EARLY DECISION” – the binding agreement between student and university.

How Do I Apply?

• Manual High School and YPAS may nominate ONE student to compete for the Jefferson Scholarship.

• Present a letter of interest and resume to Mr. Robinson in the Counselor’s Office to indicate your wish to be considered for nomination

• In your letter of interest, address what qualifies you for the Jefferson Scholars Nomination over all other seniors at Manual/YPAS.

• Most importantly - Explain your exceptional abilities in leadership and scholarship, and how you show promise in making a significant contribution to the University Community as students and to society at large as graduates.

• After we select who our nominee will be, further instructions will be forthcoming.

Deadlines?

• Your letter of interest and resume should be delivered to Mr. Robinson no later than October 10, 2018. Within the letter of interest, please include a statement that allows our local selection committee know and understand your seriousness to accept the award should it be offered.

• 97% ranked in the top 10% of their class

• 58 % NHS or Cum Laude

• Varsity Athletes 17, Captains of Athletic Team 12

• Editors of newspaper, yearbook or literary magazine 10

• Model United Nations or Model Arab League 5; Received Best/Outstanding Delegate Awards 5

• Mock Trial Team 5, Captains 1

• Speech/Debate Team 10, Captains 8

• Science Olympiad Team Captains 3; Regional or State Winners 3; National Winner 1

• Quiz Bowl/Academic Team 6; Captain 2

• Founder of a School/Community Organization, Business or Non-profit 12

• Arkansas Designer and Photojournalist of the year by Arkansas Scholastic Press Association
