Thomas D. (Trey) Hawkins, III

Biography

Trey Hawkins is a political professional with two decades of experience in campaign and political action committee (PAC) management, fundraising, political communication, grassroots and issue advocacy. He currently serves as the Credit Union National Association (CUNA)’s Deputy Chief Advocacy Officer for Political Action, leading political and grassroots action on behalf of pro-credit union candidates and issue advocacy campaigns nationwide.

Since joining CUNA in 2005, Trey has built its political program into one of the nation’s leading trade association political operations, including a $5.3 million federal PAC that consistently ranks among the five largest trade association PACs nationally. In the 2018 election cycle, he directed CUNA’s record $7 million federal independent expenditure and member voter contact program, helping several credit union champions win tight races while delivering a pro-credit union majority in Congress. Trey’s other advocacy accomplishments and innovations include CUNA’s seven-figure National Advocacy Fund (NAF) to finance issue advocacy and soft-money political activities and its Member Activation Program (MAP), which empowers over 500 credit unions to deliver advocacy messaging to their millions of members.

Prior to joining CUNA, Trey served as the Louisiana Democratic Party’s Finance Director during the 2003 state and 2004 federal elections, raising nearly $6 million for the party and its candidates while directing overall fundraising strategy for the coordinated campaign efforts that elected a Governor, four of the other five statewide office holders, and a U.S. Congressman. Trey also managed a campaign for Illinois Lieutenant Governor and directed campaign finance strategy for three nationally-targeted U.S. House campaigns in Illinois, Tennessee and Iowa.

A native of Montgomery, Alabama, Trey holds a B.A. in History and American Politics & Policy from Tulane University. He resides with his wife, three children and chocolate lab in Arlington, Virginia. His spare time is divided among youth sports, leading a Cub Scouts den, volunteer advocacy for the type 1 diabetes community, and obsessing way too much over the Atlanta Braves, New Orleans Saints, Auburn Tigers and Tulane Green Wave.
