RINGING NEWS

Spring 2010

So, how are you coming on those New Year's resolutions? Still doing less or more of that thing you promised yourself? Did you start or stop that habit? Here's my horrible confession to you: I don't make resolutions, because then I don't have to feel guilty about not following through, because I know I probably won't. Isn't that awful?

Here's what I DO know, though. Whatever your resolution, doing something different, making a change, can be a very positive experience. Diversity is a good thing. To be single-minded to the exclusion of ALL else is probably not very healthy. When I was little, I thought a well-rounded person was someone who needed to exercise. Turns out it's a compliment! No matter how much you love your job, devoting 100% of your time to it is not the best thing. If your friends are your life, how will you earn a living? A hobby that engulfs you may leave you alone all the time. Each one of these things is a good thing, but to miss out on LIFE because of them is not. I realized I don't spend enough time at home a few weeks ago when my neighbor was taken to the hospital in an ambulance in the middle of the night. I wanted to go visit her in the hospital the next day, until I realized I had no idea what her last name was. And then I realized that I only know the first name of her and my next door neighbors. I leave early and get home late at night and have weird days off and haven't gotten to know anyone on the street since I moved in. A little less work and a little more neighborliness...a little less TV and a little more exercise...a little less computer and a little more friends...THAT makes a diversified, well-rounded person. That's what I want to be!

Why am I telling you this? I'd be willing to bet that a majority of you reading this have never rung bells outside the four walls of your church or school, with marked-up music. Am I right? How about becoming a better-rounded musician...helping your ringers become well-rounded? Leave a page without markings. Memorize a piece. Play at a nursing home, or on a street corner. Come to a Festival event! Stretch your choir to do something different, and they will become bonded together and more excited about bells. Central Texas Spring Ring is right around the corner, and it's time to start registering for the Area IX Festival in Arlington this summer. Why not make THIS your New Year's resolution?

Ringingly Yours, Sheryl `Bob' Cory
