The KnessetMember of Knesset Nachman ShaiNachman Shai was born in Israel in 1946. He performed his military service in the Nahal Brigade, Army Radio (Galei Tzahal) and as IDF Spokesman. He was discharged with the rank of Brigadier General.Shai holds a BA in General History and Political Science and a MA cum laude in Communications from The Hebrew University, as well as a Ph.D. in Communication and Political Science from Bar-Ilan University. The topic of his doctorate was “Public Diplomacy and Low-Intensity Violence, Israel 2000-2005”. He was also Research Fellow at Harvard University’s School of Government, and completed with honors advanced business management studies at The Hebrew University. Shai also studied communication at the World Press Institute in Minnesota.Nachman Shai filled the following positions: Press Secretary for the Israeli delegation to the United Nations, Press Officer at the Israeli Embassy in Washington, Communications Consultant to the Minister of Defense, Commander and Chief Editor of Army Radio, IDF Spokesperson, Chairman of the Second TV and Radio Authority, Chairman of Channel 2 News Television Company, Chairman of the Israel Audience Research Board, Director General of the Ministry of Science, Culture and Sports, Chairman of the Israel Broadcast Authority, Senior VP and Director General of UJC Israel (now the Jewish Federations of North America).Between 1994 and 1997, Shai chaired the Musicon Organization. Between 1996 and 1997, he was chairman of "Mishkenot Sha’ananim". Between 1996 and 2002, Shai served as chairman of the Ruach Tova organization. Between 2003 and 2008, Shai chaired the finance committee of the Ethiopian National Project, and from 2008, has been member of the Public Board of the Gesher Theater.Nachman Shai was first elected to the 18th Knesset on the Kadima party's list, during which he served as member of the Education, Culture and Sports Committee, the Economic Affairs Committee, the Committee on the Status of Women, the Subcommittee on Trafficking of Women, and the Joint Committee for the draft law on economic streamlining for 2009 and 2010 (Chapter 14: Broadcast Authority). He was also an alternate member of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee and Ethics Committee. Shai also chaired the Lobby for the Promotion of Israel’s Public Diplomacy (PR), the Lobby for the Prevention of Illegal Immigration to Israel, the Lobby for the Elderly and the Lobby for Strengthening the Jewish People, and was a member of other lobbies. In addition, Shai chaired the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee team for Political Struggle, served as acting chairman of the Kadima parliamentary group, chairman of the Knesset Delegation for Dialogue with the European Parliament and head of the Israel-Taiwan and Israel-Britain Parliamentary Friendship Groups.Shai was elected to the 19th Knesset on behalf of the Israel Labor Party, and was member of the House Committee, the Internal Affairs and Environment Committee, the Special Committee on Drug and Alcohol Abuse, the Joint Committee on Victims of Violence and Racism in Sports, alternate member of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee and Special Committee for Discussion on the Public Broadcast Bill. He also chaired the Lobby for US-Israel Relations, the Lobby for Homefront Security, the Lobby for Strengthening the Jewish World, the Jerusalem Lobby, the Blue and White Lobby and the Pensioners Lobby. He was also member of other lobbies and chaired the Knesset Delegation for the European Council Parliamentary Assembly and head of the Israel-Japan and Israel-Germany Parliamentary Friendship Groups.Shai was elected to the 20th Knesset on behalf of the Zionist Camp (joint Labor-Hatenua list), and is a member of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, the Committee on the Status of Women and Gender Equality and the Special Committee for the Discussion of the Public Broadcast Bill (Amendment) 5775-2015. He also chairs the Lobby for Strengthening the Jewish World, the Lobby for Jerusalem, the Lobby for Strengthening Israel’s Foreign Affairs System, the Lobby for Pensioners, the US-Israel Relations Lobby, and is a member of other lobbies. Shai heads the Israel-Germany Parliamentary Friendship Group.In 2013, Shai published his book Milhamedia (Media War) which was awarded the Yitzhak Sadeh Prize for Military Literature. Shai’s doctorate won the Tshetshik Prize for Strategic Studies on Israel's Security from the Institute for National Security Studies at Tel-Aviv University. Shai publishes articles in daily newspapers and professional essays on media-related issues. He lives in Mevasseret Zion, is married and the father of three. ................
