INTRODUCTION

Revision: Nil.

_____________________________________________________________________

Reason for Learning:

The badges of rank worn by members of the Australian Army Cadet

Corps are a visual symbol of the rank structure on which the

organisation of the Corps is based. Without this rank structure the

Corps would fast become a body without direction and incapable of

achieving its aims and goals. The badges of rank and titles used within

the Corps are based on the customs, traditions and precedence of the

Australian Army, even though members of the Corps do not form part

of the Army. For the rank structure to operate efficiently within the

Cadet Corps, all members must be able to identify the badges of rank

worn and know their precedence.

_____________________________________________________________________

Statement of Objective:

At the end of this lesson given suitable instruction, students will:

a. be able to correctly identify each rank from LCPL to

LTCOL, and

b. be able to correctly place them in seniority.

BODY

____________________________________________________________________

Stage 1. Categories.

The ranks in the Australian Army are divided into four basic

categories - they are:

a. Privates, etc,

b. Non-Commissioned Officers (NCO),

c. Warrant Officers (WO), and

d. Commissioned Officers.

It must be noted that the Commission referred to is a Queen's

Commission and the Warrant is a Queen's Warrant.

The ranks used in the Australian Army Cadet Corps are grouped under

the same categories. The first being a Cadet who wears no badge of

rank.

Confirm Stage 1 by questions from and to the class.

_____________________________________________________________________

Stage 2. Non-Commissioned Officers (NCO).

Non-commissioned officers are further sub-divided into Junior and

Senior NCO and they wear their rank on the sleeve.

a. Junior:

(1) LCPL, and

(2) CPL.

b. Senior:

(1) SGT, and

(2) SSGT.

Confirm Stage 2 by questions from and to the class.

_____________________________________________________________________

Stage 3. Warrant Officer (WO).

There are two classes of Warrant Officer:

a. WO Class Two - WOII, and

b. WO Class One - WOI.

Warrant Officers wear their rank on their sleeves. It must be stressed

that WOI is senior to WOII and that CQMS, CSM and RSM are job

appointments not ranks.

Confirm Stage 3 by questions from and to the class and having each

student practice.

_____________________________________________________________________

Stage 4. Commissioned Officers.

Although Officers in the Australian Army Cadet Corps do not receive

a commission they are still classed under this category within the

Corps. Officers in the Corps are further divided as follows:

a. Cadet Under Officer (CUO),

b. Officer of Cadets:

(1) Lieutenant (LT),

(2) Captain (CAPT),

(3) Major (MAJ), and

(4) Lieutenant Colonel (LTCOL).

All Officers wear their rank on the shoulders in the shape of

diamonds except for CUO who have one large diamond known as a

lozenge.

Confirm Stage 4 by questions from and to the class.

_____________________________________________________________________

Stage 5. Precedence.

Officers of Cadets and Cadets hold rank, precedence and command

ONLY within the Australian Army Cadet Corps.

Confirm Stage 5 by questions from and to the class.

_____________________________________________________________________

Stage 6. Addressing by Rank.

The method for addressing different ranks is as follows:

a. Officers - It is customary for all officers to address

their senior as 'Sir'. All warrant officers, senior

non-commissioned officers and other ranks address all

officers as 'Sir'.

b. Warrant Officers - Warrant officers are addressed by

their juniors as 'Sir'. Officers should address

warrant officers as 'Warrant Officer' or, if holding

an appointment such as Company Sergeant-Major or

Regimental Sergeant-Major, the warrant officer is

addressed by that appointment. The terms 'Mr' and 'Sar

Major' should not be used to address warrant

officers.

c. Sergeants, Staff Sergeants and Other Ranks - All

ranks below Staff Sergeant should be addressed by

their rank title. The exception to this rule are those

holding appointments of Chief Clerk and Company

Quartermaster Sergeant where those holding equal rank

or higher may address the appointees as 'Chief' or

'CQ' as applicable.

The addressing of some ranks differs within different Corps. A few

examples these are:

a. Private:

(1) Engineers - Sapper,

(2) Artillery - Gunner,

(3) RAEME - Craftsman.

b. Lance Corporal / Corporal

(1) Artillery - Lance Bombardier / Bombardier.

Confirm Stage 6 by questions from and to the class.

_____________________________________________________________________

Stage 7. Paying Compliments.

Within the Corps, paying compliments is as follows:

a. To CUO - all Cadet Warrant Officers, NCOs and

Cadets,

b. To OOC - All Cadets including CUO.

Confirm Stage 7 by questions from and to the class.

CONCLUSION

_____________________________________________________________________

Clear Up Doubtful Points: Final questions to and from the squad.

_____________________________________________________________________

Test of Objective: Test the objective by the following:

a. Issue the Test sheet.

_____________________________________________________________________

Feedback: Tell the squad what standard they achieved during the

period and if necessary what they can do to

improve.

_____________________________________________________________________

Summary: The main points to remember are:

a. The badges of rank for all ranks LCPL to

WOI are worn on the sleeve.

b. The badges of rank for Officers are worn

on their shoulders.

_____________________________________________________________________

Statement of Relevance: During this lesson you have been taught how

to recognise the badges of rank within the

Cadet Corps. The rank structure of the Cadet

Corps is the basis of the chain of command

within the Corps. If these elements cease to

function efficiently the Corps will fail to

achieve its aims. It is therefore essential that

all members of the Corps be able to correctly

identify the badges of rank worn and

understand their command precedence.

_____________________________________________________________________

Safety Precautions: Switch off electrical items and unplug from

power.

_____________________________________________________________________

Recondition Stores: Clean and tidy the classroom and return any

stores to the Q Store.

_____________________________________________________________________

Dismissal: Duty student to take charge and move the squad to their

next lesson.
