INTRODUCTION
The Middle School Visual Arts Curriculum for the Rapid City Area School (RCAS) District is aligned with the South Dakota State Visual Arts Standards (SD Department of Education and Cultural Affairs), and the National Standards for Arts Education (The Consortium of National Arts Education Association).
A study of art enhances understanding of the human condition, past and present, and fosters discriminatory appreciation of the elements of the world, both natural and human-made.
An education in the visual arts also enhances student computer skills. The inclusion of technology in the educational environment is a direct compliment to the visual arts. Technology has the power to teach, to motivate, to captivate, and to transform an ordinary classroom into a training ground for the next generation of artists, entrepreneurs, and leaders. Virtually all work created on computers uses visual arts elements and design principles as a part of every document.
VISION
The continued success of civilization to be both dynamic and nurturing ultimately depends on how well we develop the capacities of our children to live rich, rewarding, and meaningful lives in a vastly complex world. The vision is to affirm that a future worth having depends on being able to construct a vital understanding of the arts, and that by doing so, students will be provided opportunities for personal study and fulfillment of self-potential.
