We’ll uncover the techniques they used to make their paintings the great master works that they are. We will learn how to create distance within plein air or photographed landscapes using color, perspective, detail and thoughtfully developed compositions. Portaiture Made Simple with Mary Giammarino

Charles Hawthorne, the founder of the Cape Cod School of Art in Provincetown, MA., developed this method of teaching portraiture which is still carried on today. Like Hawthorne, we will place our models on a beach with the sun behind them and their faces in silhouette. These simple, featureless paintings were dubbed “mud heads”. We will carry on the tradition of beginning portrait painting by eliminating details (eyes, nose and mouth) and instead capturing the gesture and essence of the person before us. We will work from live models.

Instructor: Mary Giammarino has painted and taught classes in the Cape Cod School of Art technique since 1989. She teaches at Cape Cod, Vermont and Italy. She is represented by the Julie Heller Gallery in Provincetown and the Elizabeth Rowley Gallery in Orleans, Ma. See her work at
