8th Grade Art Lessons

Lesson: Clay Animals

Objectives:

1. Students will learn about a variety of animals through hands-on activity.

2. Students will learn to look for details and how to incorporate them into their art.

3. Students will demonstrate a competency in following directions.

4. Students will demonstrate a knowledge and competency in clay techniques.

5. Students will complete a finished clay animal.

Activities:

1. The instructor will talk about various animals that students could create from clay using a pinch pot technique.

2. The instructor will demonstrate how to create a pinch pot and joining techniques in clay.

3. The instructor will show clay animal samples.

4. Students will be instructed to decide which four legged animal they would like to create in clay.

5. Students will create and join two pinch pots for the body.

6. Students will create a head for their animal from a small pinch pot or other form.

7. Students will create legs and other body parts for their animals. Coils may be used for legs or other forms.

8. Students will attach all parts using scratch, wet, and press techniques.

9. Students will refine their animals with details using various tools.

10. Clay animals will have to dry and be fired. Students will then decorate their animals with glaze and/or acrylic paint.

Materials: pencils, clay, clay tools, water, water containers, paper towels, kiln, paint

Homework: Any unfinished work or work for days absent.

Assessment: 1 to 20 on a 20-point scale for work appropriate to the grade level (half for construction and half for decoration).
