Explain to students that they will be creating an artwork that expresses optimism. Clarify students understanding of optimism and ways it could be expressed in images. Students could develop a list of synonyms for optimism.
Students’ artwork could be displayed within a public space in their school (front foyer, library/resource centre) or a local community art gallery. Other classes can be encouraged to create artworks with the same theme and an art exhibition could be held.
Students can choose a variety of media and materials to create their art work. These could include:
• Drawing (charcoal, felt pens, oil pastels, watercolour pencils, crayon resist)
• Painting (acrylic, oil, watercolours)
• Photography (conventional, digital, disposable, hand colouring black and white photos)
• Electronic (electronically generating images using software such as Photoshop or Kidpix or creating art online at the National Gallery of Art )
• Mixed media (collage, photomontage)
Discuss with students ways they could mount their artwork for display.
