The writing and rhetorical components of Humanities culminate in a senior research project which comprises the core of the Senior Writing class. As part of the course, students select and work with a faculty committee which advises during the research and writing process and questions and judges the student during the oral defense in the spring.? Learning Objectives“I'm not a very good writer, but I'm an excellent rewriter” (James Michener).Students will select appropriate sources of information, will take notes without plagiarizing, and will defend their ideas clearly, concisely, and correctly through the writing of clear and valid thesis statements, the selection and presentation of strong supporting arguments, and the inclusion of challenging conclusions. Students will analyze sentence structure and edit their own written work to reflect greater sentence variety. Students will gain confidence writing college application essays. Students will select words for clarity, elegance, and strength and will structure arguments for impact and clarity. Through multiple revisions, students will experience the world of the professional writer. Students will identify essays in MLA and APA format. Students will state the differences between the two essay formats.Classroom ExpectationsStudents will complete work on time. Missing work will result in the student’s loss of off-campus privileges during lunch and study classes until the work is made up.Students will meet with Mrs. Helms and Ms. Denman as well as thesis committee members whenever scheduled.3. Students will submit serious drafts and revisions that reflect their best effort.4. Word-processed documents will be in black ink and will follow MLA formatting. Handwritten essays also will be double-spaced. See the TAR Writing Handbook available at Mrs. Helms’s page.Graded WorkHomework Assignments and Short Writing Assignments (i.e., excluding Senior Thesis drafts and final paper)Written work will be graded for both completion (submission on time) and content. The point value of each assignment will vary depending on the length and difficulty of the task. Homework Assignments turned in one day late will receive half credit; homework later than one day receives zero credit. Work is due at the beginning of the class period unless otherwise specified on the assignment rubric. Assignments due to must be posted by the deadline date. Developing writing skill requires much writing and re-writing. It is expected that students will invest sufficient time and energy in order to improve their writing throughout the course of the year. Revisions to perfection are encouraged for every writing assignment and may result in points back up to half the value of the deduction. Senior ThesisEvery senior must research, write, and publicly present and defend a Senior Thesis which is graded by the student's faculty committee. The Senior Thesis is a significant research?paper on a topic of cultural significance that is converted to a persuasive speech and presented in the spring to an audience of faculty and peers. Students lose 10% of the point value of the assignment for each day late.
