Stock Market Simulation

You will be participating in the Stock Market Challenge. This simulation will take place online:

The aim of this simulation is learn the skills and characteristics of an enterprising person by testing different investing strategies in a competitive and challenging financial environment.

As a result of this project you will be able to do the following:

1. Define the skills and attributes of enterprising employees, the distinguishing features of their work environments, and the challenges and rewards of becoming an enterprising person.

2. Understand the terms used in the stock exchange and the concept of portfolio management.

Procedure

Students will work in pairs. Each team will be given $100,000 dollars to manage a portfolio of stocks. Each team must invest in at least 5 different stocks. Student will NOT be permitted to buy stocks that are selling at less than $5 dollars. Additionally, a commission of $10 dollars will be applied to every transaction. Students will be limited to trade only on NASDAQ, NYSE and TSX exchanges.

Students will be competing with each other and the highest valued portfolio at the end of the game will win a prize.

Report/Portfolio

Part I - Weekly Reports- Due Every Thursday

Each group will submit weekly status reports. Only the FIRST report will not be marked but the subsequent reports will be graded. Weekly reports should have:

1. Title page with group member names and date.

2. A copy of your stock portfolio and trade history.

3. A graph showing your weekly portfolio performance.

4. One page write-up summarizing the below

a. Investing strategy

b. Analyzing the success of failure of the portfolio

c. What are you going to do to improve the performance of your portfolio?

5. One article – half a page explanation as to how that article influenced your investment decision.

6. Half a page for each team member listing the skills learned from this simulation and the characteristics needed to be successful in this simulation.

Part II – Final Report

1. Title page

2. A copy of your stock portfolio.

3. A graph showing your weekly portfolio value.

4. Five newspaper articles with summaries and analysis on stock market related issues and how it impacted your investing decision/s. 4-5 pages double spaced.

5. A 3 page double spaced report indicating what was learned from the simulation. This should include the pros and cons of the simulation, an analysis of your strategy and how successful your group was in compression to the class.

6. Enterprising person reflection paper. How did this simulation create a positive or negative enterprising environment? What skills and characteristics are needed to be successful in this simulation?
