In addition to the text, we will be reading selected journal articles related to discussion topics. All journal articles will be made available on SharePoint.

Course Overview & Objectives

This course in Human Development provides an overview of the physical, cognitive, psychosocial, and theoretical aspects of development across the lifespan. Topics in human development include: scientific approaches to studying change over time; theories of development; biological, cognitive, emotional, and social development across infancy, early and middle childhood, adolescence, early and middle adulthood, and late adulthood; and death and dying. We will also discuss developmental disorders (e.g., Autism, FASD) and agerelated disorders (e.g., dementia and Alzheimer's disease).

Student Learning Outcomes

1. Understand the physical, cognitive, emotional, and social domains of development across the human lifespan.

2. Analyze key concepts, theories, and research in developmental psychology.

This page will include: a course syllabus, PowerPoint slides for lectures, assigned journal articles, and links to websites of interest. Policies

Attendance: I encourage you to attend every class, but I will not be taking attendance passed the first few class meetings. There will be various activities and graded assignments during each class. Please contact me if you will be missing a class; making up missed assignments is addressed below.

Cell Phones/Computers: Please silence your cell phones during class. Phone use (e.g., text messaging) can be a distraction, not only for you but for other students as well. Upon request, computers will be allowed for note taking only. Students who abuse these policies will be asked to leave the class room for the day. There will be breaks during the class allowing you to check your devises. Just remember to silence them when class resumes.

Activities and Assignments

Assignments for this course include four unit exams, four article evaluations, and multiple quizzes. The course comprises 4 Units (Unit I: Prenatal through Toddlerhood; Unit II: Early and Middle Childhood; Unit III: Adolescence and Early Adulthood; and Unit IV: Middle and Late Adulthood, Death and Dying).

Unit exams will consists of multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, and short-answer questions derived from the text and lectures. Exams will only cover unit chapters and the final exam will not be comprehensive.

Quizzes will include questions related to lecture/chapter topics, with one quiz per chapter. Although we will be covering a total of 19 chapters in the text, only 17 of these 5 point quizzes will count towards your final grade so you can miss a total of two quizzes without it affecting your grade. Quizzes cannot be made up.

Journal Article Evaluations will consist of critically reading selected peer-reviewed scientific journal articles and answering questions concerning those articles. We will read four articles over the semester, with one article covering topics for each of the developmental units covered in the lectures (e.g., infancy, adolescence, adulthood, and late adulthood). The articles will cover biological, cognitive, emotional, or social aspects of the appropriate developmental stage. Articles and questions will be made available on the SharePoint page. These assignments can be e-mailed to me or printed out and handed to me prior to class on the due date. All late assignments will receive a 2.5% penalty per day.

Towards the end of the course, one extra credit assignment (12 points, 3%) will be offered to those on the cusp of a letter grade. For example, if your final grade will be 88% (i.e., B), the extra-credit assignment may help boost your grade to a 91% (i.e., A).

Grades A = 90-100% (580-645 pts) B = 80-89% (516-579 pts) C = 70-79% (451-515 pts) D = 60-69% (387-450 pts) F = 59% ( 386 pts)
