History Skills: How to analyse a cartoon

History Skills: How to analyse a cartoon (in general / in a history paper)

Step (task) 1: Analyse the given source.

➢ formal analysis

- artist, (caption?), date/place of publication, text type, source type, addressees, topic, intention, historical context (short!)

➢ detailed description (NO analysis, ONLY description)

Step (task) 2: e.g. “Put the source into the historical context [of the origins of the French Revolution] and explain the elements of the cartoon.”

➢ detailed analysis against the backdrop of the historical context

- historical context (detailed!)

- How do the elements of the cartoon relate to the historical context?

Step (task) 3: e.g. “Take a critical stand on the cartoonist’s view of [the Estate-System in France on the eve of the French Revolution].”

➢ evaluation

- artist’s message

- agreement (arguments) [against the backdrop of the historical context; does history prove the artist wrong/right?]

- disagreement (arguments) [s.o.]

- your opinion, based on your argumentation (see above)
