The following are activities and accomplishments for the month of May 2007:

Recreation Program Highlights

- Johnson Parks May Day Craft Fair on May 1st turned out to be a popular event. Over 50 children participated in the making of different arts and crafts inside the gym during this event.

- The Mom and Me Pancake Breakfast drew a large crowd. The event took place on May 5th at Johnson Park. Staff did their usually good job of preparing the finest breakfast in Hallandale Beach to over 75 happy participants.

- On May 12th we celebrated the City of Hallandale Beach’s 80th birthday party. This event was a huge success. Over 2000 people participated throughout the day. Both events at South Beach and North Beach went well. South Beach hosted all the children’s activities. These included bounce houses, rock walls, face painter, balloon artist, and various children shows. North Beach was the site of our main staging area. Here were various vendors, entertainment, and fireworks.

- Saturday May 19th was our Pool Party at the Municipal Pool. We had our largest turn out yet. There was a DJ on site and plenty of fun and games.

- During the week of May 21 – May 25, Bluesten Park held competitions for Uno, Checkers, and Pool Table. The children had fun participating in these events in which trophies were given out to the top performers.

- On May 24th we had our monthly Once Upon a Bedtime at the Cultural Center. Captain Feather Sword and Henry the Octopus from the Wiggles performed for the children and their parents. They were a big hit with the kids.

- Monday May 28th was our Memorial Day Tribute. We had a crowd of over 100 people attend the event. We planted flags at the cemetery in the morning with the help of Fire Rescue. Refreshments were served at the Cultural Center at 9:30 and the event took place at 11:00 at the memorial monument.

- We are currently registering for summer camp. The first 3 weeks have already sold out.

Athletics/Aquatics/Tennis Highlights

Athletics

- PAL Youth Baseball concluded its 2007 season. All teams participated in playoffs which were held throughout Broward and Dade Counties. A Rookie Division playoff tournament was hosted at Bluesten Park. An end-of-season trip to a Florida Marlins game is planned for June.

- Youth Track and Field continued its season. Over 70 children between the ages of 5 and 17 are registered. Top athletes will compete in regional meets to qualify for the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Jr. Olympics.

- The Youth Basketball season began with 12 teams competing in this in-house league.

Aquatics

- A swim party was held at the Municipal Pool on Saturday, May 19th. Over 80 kids enjoyed an early afternoon of swimming, games and music.

- Six pool passes were sold during the month of May: Five adult resident and 1 adult non-resident.

- Swim lessons for preschool through advanced swimmers were held, and registrations are currently underway for the busy summer season.

Tennis (Golden Isles Tennis Complex)

- Two tennis tournaments were held in May.

- 57 tennis lessons were offered in May.

- 20 children are registered for tennis summer camp.

- Four tennis clinics took place in May.

Other

There were no vehicle accidents in May.
