12 Young Musicians to Compete Live for Grand Prize

& Performance with the JSO

Top Three Winners to Perform in Evening Recital

GOLDEN – As America’s appetite for music competitions on television remains strong, the Jefferson Symphony International Young Artists Competition offers the public the intensity of a live competition featuring the top talent among young musicians from across the globe.

For 55 years the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra Association has fostered the talents of dedicated young musicians from around the world by hosting the Jefferson Symphony International Young Artists Competition (JSIYAC). This year’s final and live round of competition will take place on January 4, 2014 at the Arvada Center for the Humanities and Arts. It is open to the public. Twelve finalists ranging in age from 12-23 years old will compete for a grand prize of $7,000 and the opportunity to perform with the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra. The top three winners will perform in recital that evening.

The IYAC competition alternates every other year between pianists and all other instrumentalists. This is an instrumental year and the finalists will be performing on cello, clarinet, euphonium, flute, viola and violin. The twelve finalists were selected to compete after their audition tapes were carefully judged by bassoonist and Metropolitan State University of Denver (MSUD) instructor Michael Christoph; area free-lance percussionist Rachel Hargroder; trumpeter and MSUD faculty member Michael Hengst; Arapahoe Philharmonic principal cellist James Todd; and violinist Gregory Walker, professor at the University of Colorado-Denver.

Judges for the live round include 1968 competition winner Gregory Dufford, clarinetist formerly with the San Francisco Opera and many other musical ensembles and presently an MSUD faculty member; Cara Kizer, horn player with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra (CSO); and Erik Peterson, CSO violinist.

The competition attracts top talent from around the globe. This year’s finalists include musicians born in Canada, China and Taiwan, as well as the United States. Among the respected music schools attended are Julliard, Mannes, Northwestern University, Shepherd School (Rice University), and Schwob School (Columbus State University, Georgia) as well as the University of Colorado and Lamont School of Music (University of Denver).

Finalists will compete for a $5,000 annuity (payable at $1,000 per year for five years) to the first-place winner, as well as cash prizes of $2,000, $1,500 and $1,000 to the first-, second- and third- place awardees. The Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities where the competition and evening recital will be held is a co-sponsor of the event. In addition, the competition is underwritten by the Golden Civic Foundation, Wilmot Charitable Trust, Kinder Morgan and the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District.

The competition offers a unique opportunity to hear up-and-coming stars in the world of classical music throughout the day at the final (live) round of the annual competition. It takes place at the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities from 10:00am to 5:00pm on Saturday, January 4, 2014. The public is invited to attend any or all auditions at no charge. The winners will be announced late that day. The top three finalists will perform their concertos at the IYAC recital that evening at 7:30pm in the Main Stage Theater. Tickets for the recital are an affordable $10 for adults and $5 for children under 13. A small number of 2-for-1 tickets will be offered on a first come, first served basis. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Arvada Center at 720-898-7200 or at .

More details about the competition as well as additional information about past winners can be found at . The audition schedule will be posted as soon as it is available.

In addition to the evening recital on January 4 and a performance with the JSO on March 23, 2014, the winner of the 2014 competition will also give a 30 minute solo recital in a beautiful private home in Morrison on Friday evening, March 21, to raise money for the 2015 IYAC. Guests can meet the winner at a champagne and dessert reception. Seating is limited for this special event. Contact the JSO office or check the JSO website after January 15 for further information and to make reservations.

The Jefferson Symphony Orchestra is currently celebrating its 61st anniversary with an exciting line up of concerts. It is a nonprofit organization composed of 75 dedicated and gifted musicians. Donations, grants, ticket purchases and the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District support the classical season concerts, the International Young Artists Competition and a free summer concert in Golden.
