After completing my fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio I went into private practice in Atlanta, GA with an established Colon and Rectal group from 1985 to 1987. I left that group and went in to solo private practice. I had a vision to develop a Single Specialty Colon and Rectal Group and in 1987 the Georgia Colon and Rectal Surgical Associates was started. Over 27 years, GCRSA developed and expanded to nine Board Certified CRS, with seven offices and covering 12 Hospitals in the Greater Atlanta Area. In 1990, I spearheaded the development of a self-funded ACGME Fellowship in Colon and Rectal Surgery. The GCRSA Colon and Rectal Fellowship over a short time became one of the top ten programs in the US. As the economics of health care changed at the end of 2011 through 2012, I negotiated a sale of GCRSA to a Northside Hospital Health Care Network. I was recruited (2011 - 2012) by LSU Health Sciences Center Department of Surgery, School of Medicine and moved to New Orleans to develop a Section of Colon and Rectal Surgery. I could not pass up an opportunity to work for an academic institution.Hospital Affiliations:Active StaffAtlanta Medical Center, Atlanta, GA 1985 - 2000St. Joseph’s Hospital of Atlanta, Atlanta GA 1985 - 2012Northside Hospital, Atlanta, GA 1985 - 2012DeKalb Medical Center, Decatur, GA 1987 - 2012Children’s Hospital of Atlanta, Atlanta, GA 1987 - 2012LSU Interim Hospital/University Medical Center, New Orleans, LA 2012 - presentTouro Infirmary, New Orleans, LA 2012 - presentCourtesy StaffEmory Crawford Long Hospital Atlanta, GA 1985 - 2012Piedmont-Fayette Hospital, Fayetteville, GA 1995 - 2012DeKalb Medical Hillendale Hospital, Lithonia, GA 1999 - 2012Northside Forsyth Hospital, Forsyth, GA 2000 - 2012Gwinnett Medical Center, Lawrenceville, GA 1995 - 2012Gwinnett Medical Center, Duluth, GA 1995 - 2012Ochsner Baptist Hospital, New Orleans, LA 2012 - present Membership in Professional Organizations:Southwest Oncology Group, Member 1985 - 2012DeKalb Medical Society, Member 1988 - 2012American College of Physician Executives, Member 1994 - 2010American Medical Association (AMA), Member 1985 - presentSoutheastern Surgical Congress, Member 1988 - presentSociety of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, Fellow1997 – presentSociety of Laparoscopic Surgeons 2017- presentPiedmont Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons Member 1988 - present President 2009 - 2010American Society of Colon & Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS)Member 1990 - present Fellow 1995 – presentMember at Large Executive Council 2011-2013Vice President 2015 - 2016President Elect 2016 - 2017President 2017 –2018Past President 2018- American College of SurgeonsMember1983 - presentFellow 1988 –presentAwards and Honors:1983First Prize: Excellent Presentation, Resident Night, New York Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons 1983Frist Prize, Best Paper, Resident Night, New York Academy of Medicine Residents Night 1985Honorable Mention, Category 1, Resident Annual Scientific Essay ContestLong Island Jewish-Hillside Medical Center1992 Outstanding Leadership Award, Crohn’s Colitis Foundation of AmericaGeorgia/Tennessee Chapter1993Outstanding Leadership Award, Crohn’s Colitis Foundation of AmericaGeorgia/Tennessee Chapter1994Make It Happen Award, Crohn’s Colitis Foundation of AmericaGeorgia/Tennessee Chapter1998Premiere Physician Award 2002In Honor of Guy Orangio MD served as Chief of Staff for six years with diligence, enthusiasm, thoroughness and Integrity, Resolution of the Saint Joseph’s Health System and Saint Joseph’s Hospital of Atlanta Board, Saint Joseph’s Hospital System Atlanta, GA2002-2010 Atlanta’s Top Doctors Award, Atlanta, Ga 2012Outstanding Board Member, Resolution of Saint Joseph’s Health System Recognition 2012Life Time Membership of the Board of Directors, Saint Joseph’s Health System 2014Life Time Achievement Award, Union Hill High School, Union City, NJ 2012-2018New Orleans Top Physicians, New Orleans, LA 2015-2018 Best Doctor’s Louisiana 2018 Honorary Fellow of Chinese Society of Surgery 2018 The International Alliance of Natural Orifice Specimen Extraction Surgery (NOSE)Honorary Vice President November 30, 2018Xi-Shan Wang President2018 Honorary Fellow Chinese Society of Anorectal SurgeonsDecember 1, 2018 President Chan gang Fu2018 Honorary Professor of Shanghai East Hospital, Tongji UniversityDecember 1, 2018 President Zhongmin Liu TEACHING EXPERIENCE AND RESPONSIBILITIES Resident Training:General Surgery Residency Georgia Baptist Medical Center, (Now Atlanta Medical Center), Atlanta, GA 1985 – 2000 Medical Student Education:Georgia Baptist Medical Center Teaching faculty for 3rd &4th year medical students Medical College of Georgia 1985 - 2000Ross Medical School 3rd and 4th year Medical Students Surgical Clinical rotations 2010 – 2012Program Director Georgia Colon & Rectal Surgical Associates ACGME Fellowship Colon and Rectal Surgery, Established, 1999, PD 2011 – 2012 Program Director LSU Department of Surgery, Section of Colon Rectal FellowshipAccredited 2018 Director UMC Rectal Cancer Multidisciplinary TeamChair of the RC MDTRESEARCH AND SCHOLARSHIPCurrent Research:AMC-083 Tissue Acquisition for Analysis of Prognostic Factors, Immunology and Genetic Progression of HIV-1 Associated Malignancies; Co-Investigator.
