“A Man and Prayer… Hindrances to Prayer

Basil Marotta Jericho Ministries

Session Outline: Hindrances to Prayer

We want to find the God who is, rather than the god we want. The God who is wants a vital personal relationship with Him. Like He did with Adam, He wants to walk with us and talk with us. To have this trusting relationship with Him, we must get to know him…you won’t trust someone you do not know. We get to know Him through reading and meditating on His Word, praying… communing with Him, and having an attitude of praising Him. Today we continue our study of prayer, specifically what are possible hindrances to getting our prayers answered.

Why do my prayers go unanswered? What are some conditions and hindrances to effective prayer?

1: Doubt or unbelief.

(James 1:5-8) If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. {6} But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. {7} That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; {8} he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.

(Mark 11:22-24) "Have faith in God," Jesus answered. {23} "I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. {24} Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

2: Not asking at all.

(James 4:2-3) You want something but don't get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask God. {3} When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.

3: Giving up too soon.

(Luke 18:1) Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.

(Mat 7:7-8) "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. {8} For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.

4: Not asking according to God’s will.

(1 John 5:14-15) This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. {15} And if we know that he hears us--whatever we ask--we know that we have what we asked of him.

(Mark 14:36) "Abba, Father," he said, "everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will."

Mark 11:23-25NIV) "I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. (24) Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. (25) And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins."

5: Walking in sin, disobedience, rebellion, or idolatry.

(Psa 66:18) If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened;

(Isa 1:18-20) "Come now, let us reason together," says the LORD. "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool. {19} If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the best from the land; {20} but if you resist and rebel, you will be devoured by the sword." For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.

(1 Sam 15:23) For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, he has rejected you as king."

(Ezek 14:3) "Son of man, these men have set up idols in their hearts and put wicked stumbling blocks before their faces. Should I let them inquire of me at all?

6: Unforgiveness- offense towards God, self and others.

(Mat 6:14-15) For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. {15} But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

7: Not honoring one another.

(1 Pet 3:7) Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.

8: Not giving tithes and offerings.

(Mal 3:8-10) "Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me. "But you ask, 'How do we rob you?' "In tithes and offerings. {9} You are under a curse--the whole nation of you--because you are robbing me. {10} Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.
