December 14, 2018

DUAA Parents and Students,

Thanks to everyone who attended our community meeting yesterday. For those who could not make it, we will be sending out a re-cap of what was covered. We thank you for your partnership.

BAG reports and high school progress reports were distributed yesterday in advisory. Need another copy? Contact Ms. Hamilton at 773-697-2216 or jrangel@cps.edu

There is one week left until Winter Break; attendance every day through December 21st is critical. Next week is college finals. Next week is also the first week of high school academic support. There are four weeks left until high school semester finals and the second quarter late work and make-up work deadline. There are five weeks left until the end of the high school semester. The semester grades are on transcripts and impact GPA. Juniors, this is the last year of academic performance before you begin applying for college and scholarships. Seniors, many of you will need to submit updated mid-year transcripts for colleges and scholarships. Be determined to do your best!

CPS and DeVry have coordinated schedules for Winter Breaks. Please limit travel and vacation to December 24th ? January 4th so all students are present for college finals (December 17 ? 21) and the start of the new college course (Jan 7 ? 11). See #7 for details.

Juniors, you will received your PSAT scores in advisory yesterday. Monday, you will take a true full-length practice SAT. This practice is a chance for you to (1) try a real SAT, (2) see how much you've progressed since the October PSAT, and (3) develop a meaningful study plan to do your best in April! It's a can't-miss day! See #8 for details.

Finally, do you know a current sophomore that might be interested in DUAA? Make sure they get invited to sign up for information sessions after break! Students and parents can fill out a form on our website and they will be added to the invitation list. The form is here or can be found at devry.cps.edu under the "Apply to DeVry" tab.

There is a lot of information! Please read this newsletter carefully. If you ever have questions, concerns, or ideas for the newsletter, please email me at cmeggert@cps.edu

In this letter, you will find: 1) Congratulations, Ms. Vazquez, our new recruitment director!

Mr. Lopez also has great experience teaching in Chicago Public Schools, including Wells Community Academy High School, Al Raby High School, and Benito Juarez Community Academy High School. Mr. Lopez started Monday, December 10th, 2018. He and Ms. Vazquez are collaborating for a smooth transition. Welcome to DUAA, Mr. Lopez!

#3: Congratulations, Theatre Classes! Please join me in congratulating our theatre students on their excellent Winter Showcase performance! Students showed the improv skills honed over a semester in Honors Theatre. Thanks to Mr. Hungerford for all of his efforts to create a wonderful event for our community!

#5: Coming Soon! Aspen Parent Portal CPS is changing student information management systems over winter break. Starting January 7, CPS will be using Aspen. This means parent portal accounts are changing to Aspen too! If you currently have a Parent Portal account, look for an email about the change to Aspen and how to continue your access to your student's grades and attendance. Please contact Ms. Drake at tdrake3@cps.edu or 773-697-2020 with any questions or concerns.

(Updated) #6: Juniors: Practice SAT Juniors, you will receive your PSAT scores in advisory on December 14th; then, on December 17th you will take a true full-length practice SAT. This practice is a chance for you to (1) try a real SAT, (2) see how much you've progressed since the October PSAT, and (3) develop a meaningful study plan to do your best in April! It's a can't-miss day! Ensure you arrive to campus no later than 7:30 am with a calculator and #2 pencils.

Details of free after-school SAT prep will be coming after the break. Are you interested in getting a head start on SAT preparation? (1) Link your College Board and Khan Academy accounts. Need help? We'll do it together in advisory on December 20th, or you can see Mrs. Peacock. (2) Start working through Khan's free, personalized study plan based on your PSAT performance! Keep track of what you finish ? your second semester advisory grade includes Khan Academy.

(Repeat) #7: High School Academic Support Starts December 17th Students, we know that graduates with a 3.0 or higher unweighted GPA are much more likely to graduate from college on-time and with scholarship money. That's why earning a C or higher in every class is so important! Students with a D or F in a high school class on Friday, December 14th will be assigned to academic support after school the week of December 17th. A warning list will be generated on Friday, December 7th. After school academic support continues through the end of the second quarter on Thursday, January 31st. These grades go on transcripts and impact GPA and graduation status. Make sure you are determined to achieve your best!

(Repeat) #8: Winter Break Schedule DUAA students have two full weeks off from both high school and college classes December 24th ? January 4th. Both high school and college resume on Monday, January 7th. January 7th also is the first day of a new college schedule. Please ensure you understand the new schedule in the DeVry Canvas system. Enjoy the break! During the two-week break, the high school office is closed and there is no CPS food service. Please note, DeVry will have adjusted holiday hours. Check before you come to campus!

(Repeat)#9: From CPS: Annual Regional Analysis Workshop

The Annual Regional Analysis (ARA) supports the district's mission to provide every student with a high-

quality education in every neighborhood by giving stakeholders a common set of information regarding

school quality, enrollment patterns, school options, and program offerings by region. In order to ensure

communities have access to this information, CPS is leading a series of ARA workshops this fall. ARA

workshops will be led by senior CPS leaders and provide members of the community with an opportunity to

learn about and discuss the schools in their region. Each meeting will begin with a short presentation by CPS

leadership on the ARA and conclude with facilitated table discussions to brainstorm ways to invest in and

strengthen schools throughout Chicago. You can register using the link below.
