PART 1 - GENERAL - Rochester City School District

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 Work of this section includes:

.1 Provide new topping at parking areas and driveways as indicated on

drawings.

1.2 Submittals

.1 Material Certificates - Provide copies of materials certificates signed

by material producer and Contractor, certifying that each material item complies with, or exceeds specified requirements.

1.3 Quality Assurance

.1 Codes and Standards - Comply with New York State, Department of

Transportation Standard Specifications, latest edition and with local governing regulations if more stringent than herein specified.

.2 Site Conditions - Apply prime and tack coats when ambient

temperature is above 50°F, and when temperature has not been below 35°F for 12 hours immediately prior to application. Do not apply when base is wet or contains an excess of moisture.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 Materials

.1 General - Use locally available materials and gradations which exhibit

a satisfactory record of previous installations.

.2 Composition of mixtures, material grade, designations and mixing

temperature shall comply with Table 401-1, NYSDOT Standard Specifications as follows:

a. Top Course - Type 8; dense gritty texture for urban streets.

.3 Tack Coat - Emulsified asphalt prior to dilution shall be one of the

following grades and material designations:

a. HFMA-2h 702-3401

b. SS-1H 702-3601

c. CSS-1h 702-4501

Dilute bituminous material with an equal volume of clean, potable water and thoroughly mixed into a homogenous liquid.

.4 Lane Marking Paint - Chlorinated, rubber-alkyd type, AASHTO M 248

(FS TT-P-115), Type III.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 Surface Preparation

.1 Remove existing pavement in areas where deteriorated to provide

solid substantial base; provide base patch or filler where required for this purpose. Saw cut prior to removal at edges of paving scheduled to remain. Protect adjacent building and improvements from removal operations and spillage for paving materials. Restore/ replace other work damaged by installation of paving work.

.2 Shave existing topping course 10 feet minimum from perimeter of

existing concrete sidewalks, curb cuts, aprons and where indicated on drawing. Pitch new topping course level to existing site features.

.3 Tack Coat - Apply to contact surfaces of existing top course,

previously constructed asphalt concrete and surfaces abutting asphalt concrete pavement. Distribute at a rate of 0.10 to 0.15 gal. per sq.yd. of surface. Allow the tack coat to dry until at proper condition to receive new paving.

3.2 Placing Mix

.1 Place asphalt concrete mixture on prepared surface. Spread mixture

within specified temperature range. Place each course to required grade, cross section and compacted thickness.

a. Top Course - 2" compacted thickness except as indicated.

.2 Spreading, finishing and compacting of paving shall comply with

NYSDOT Standard Specifications and as follows:

a. Place in strips not less than 10' wide nor greater than 25' wide

whenever practical. After first strip has been placed and rolled, place succeeding strips and extend rolling to overlap previous strips.

b. Begin rolling when mixture will bear roller weight without

excessive displacement. Provide the minimum number of passes specified in Table 401-3, NYSDOT Standard Specifications. Provide additional passes as required until all ruts, ridges, roller marks or other irregularities are removed from the surface. Along curbs and in other locations where roller is impractical, provide compaction in accordance with NYSDOT with either a hot hand tamper or vibrating plate compactor.

c. Tolerances - In-place compacted thickness will not be accepted

if exceeding variation as follows:

a. Top Course - ¼”

3.3 Traffic Lane Markings

.1 Sweep and clean surface to eliminate loose material and dust.

.2 Use chlorinated-rubber base traffic lane-marking paint factory-mixed,

quick-drying and non-bleeding, white.

.3 Provide markings for parking spaces, traffic direction and as

indicated on the drawings. Do not apply paint until layout and placement has been verified with Project Architect.

.4 Apply paint with mechanical equipment to produce uniform straight

edges. Apply in two (2) coats at manufacturer's recommended rates.

3.4 Field Quality Control

.1 Surface Smoothness - Test finished surface of asphalt concrete top

course for smoothness, using 10' straight edge applied parallel with and at right angles to centerline of paved areas. Surfaces will not be acceptable if top coat smoothness exceeds ¼" in any direction.
