Job Description

Job Title: Remaking Beamish Construction Manager

Salary: £36,100

Responsible To: Museum Director

Key Internal Relationships: Deputy Director, Remaking Beamish Project Manager, Design Team (Assistant Director – Development, Conservation Architect, Architectural Assistant, Engineering Consultants)

Construction teams and contractors, Assistant Director Finance

Purpose: To manage the delivery of all building works in the Remaking Beamish scheme, ensuring that the construction programme is delivered on time, on budget, and to the highest standards of quality and historical accuracy

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Work as part of the Remaking Beamish Project Team, placing visitors at the centre of all activity and planning

• Planning the construction of each building project. Clearly identify construction phases and critical paths, key milestones within the projects, and work with the Project Manager, Building and Design Team to ensure the required construction drawings are produced on time and to specification. Preparation of daily / weekly / monthly task lists and ensure all relevant staff are aware of priorities and deadlines

• Resource allocation supplies and contractors. Allocate the Remaking Beamish building teams and construction apprentices to projects within the programme, and identify and appoint contractors to work alongside them. Ensure that all necessary materials, supplies and prelims are in place for each phase of the project

• Ensure that the project is run within budgets, providing regular reports to the project team and highlighting issues to the Project Manager and Director as early as possible.

• Ensure that all supplies and services and procured in accordance with the Museums procurement rules, Heritage Lottery Fund guidelines and EU procurement law, where necessary utilising procurement frameworks or OJEU processes.

• Establish and set benchmarks and reporting, providing regular updates to the Project Team on all aspects of the build for dissemination to Project stakeholders.

• Responsible for the line management of the Health and Safety Manager, Construction Project Planner and Site Foremen. Ensure their effective contribution to the Remaking Beamish programme

Team Duties:

• Working closely with the Design Team to clarify details or identify missing information as early as possible, and guaranteeing that buildings comply fully with the historical details required by the Museum.

• Overseeing the production of Health and Safety documentation, and ensuring that the building site complies fully with all current legislation and best practice.

• Making sure construction apprentices are appropriately placed, supervised and trained at all times.

• Keeping sites generally clean, tidy and free from hazards.
