Algebra II Syllabus – 2014-2015 Year

Overview: This course will introduce a variety of topics in the subject of Algebra II, including the following: Linear Systems and Matrices, Series, Exponential and Logarithmic Functions, Quadratic Functions and Complex Numbers, Polynomials, Radical and Rational Functions, Data Collection and Analysis. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will have a functional understanding of Algebra II and will be prepared for future studies in higher Mathematics. Students will also be able to apply their acquired skills to a variety of real world scenarios and practical applications.

Required Materials: Course textbook or workbook (provided by instructor), scientific calculator, 3-ring binder with front & rear pockets, spiral ring 3-hole punched notebook, loose leaf paper, and pencils. Students may additionally find a ruler, graph paper, colored pencils, and highlighters to be helpful, but they are not required.

Calculator: A graphing calculator will be used in this course (such as the TI-83, TI-84). ). Although the instructor will make every effort to have calculators available for use in the classroom, availability cannot be guaranteed.

Grading: This course will be graded according to the approved Polk County grading scale. Thus, grades will be assigned as follows: A (90-100), B (80-89), C (70-79), D (60-69), F (0-59).

Grade Computations: Progress within this course will be measured by a variety of graded coursework. This will include daily homework assignments, weekly quizzes, chapter tests, and notebook evaluations. The final grade for each grading period will be based upon a category system using the following percentages:

Coursework – 90% of overall semester grade End-of-Semester Exam – 10% of overall semester grade

Unit Assessments: 60%, Unit in Progress: 40%

Overall grade breakdown: Each Semester Average: 35% (2 semesters = 70%)

End of Course Exam (EOC): 30%

Partial credit for all student work is at the discretion of the instructor.

Student grades, attendance, discipline, and other information is available online through the Parent Portal system. Access is available to parents and students with registration through Nicole Donnelly through the main office. Parents & students may also schedule a time with the instructor to meet and discuss their grades at a time convenient to both parties.

Homework: Homework is a vital part of learning and practicing the skills necessary to solve practical problems in Pre-calculus. Homework assignments will be generally given out on a daily basis and will be worth 10 points. All homework assignments will be due the day after it is assigned. Assignments must be turned in on time in order to receive full credit. Late assignments will be accepted up to the end of the chapter for which the homework was assigned, but will lose 1 point each day it is late. Students with excused absences will receive extra time to complete their assignments for full credit. It is the expected responsibility of the student to keep track of their own assignments and a sheet will be given for this purpose.

Note: Homework must be completed in pencil, and must be completed on loose leaf paper. All work must be shown as well. Work turned in completed in ink or on spiral ring notebook paper may receive lower credit at the discretion of the instructor.

Makeup Work: In accordance with the Student Code of Conduct, makeup work will be given for all absences upon request of the student. Makeup quizzes and tests will usually be administered after school at a date and time agreeable to both the teacher and the student, and cannot be taken during class periods. Remember, it is the responsibility of the student to request any makeup work from the instructor.

Classroom Policies: Students are expected to abide by the Polk County Student Code of Conduct and all Kathleen Senior High student policies at all times. In particular, the following policies will be enforced:

• Students are expected to be in class on time & prepared for the daily lesson.

• Students are expected to maintain their assigned materials and bring them every day to class.

• Students are expected to be respectful to the instructor and to each other; at a minimum, this means that students are expected to remain quiet while others are speaking and are expected to refrain from using disrespectful language in the classroom.

• Drinks in the classroom is a privilege, and not a right. Students must dispose of items properly and clean any spills before leaving the classroom. If drink spills become a repeat issue, the instructor reserves the option to ban drink from the classroom. This policy includes chewing gum. NO FOOD IS ALLOWED IN THE CLASSROOM!!!!!

• iPods/MP3 players, digital cameras, and other electronic devices are restricted from use in the classroom. A warning will be given for first violations, and the teacher will confiscate the device for any further violations. Students are not allowed to listen to MP3 players during class, especially during assessments. Cell phones and other smart devices are allowed to be used at the discretion of the teacher. Any use of these devices that does not apply to the lesson at hand is prohibited. This includes texting.

• Student hall passes will not be granted during the first 15 minutes or the last 15 minutes of a period. All students wishing to leave on a pass must have their student ID and the classroom hall pass.

CLASS RULES

1. Follow ALL School rules & Dress Code.

2. No passes the first or last 10 minutes of class

3. No passes during instruction time

4. No ear buds or head phones in class

5. No food or drinks in class

6. No talking when the teacher is talking or during announcements

Consequences for breaking rules:

1. 5 min outside to think about the situation & conference with teacher

2. New seating assignment (if appropriate)

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions regarding the course, the materials for the course (such as the model/style of calculator needed), or your child’s ongoing performance in the class.

Please note that your signature, and your child’s, is requested on this paper below. During the course of this class your child may be assigned materials such as calculators or textbooks that will become their responsibility to maintain. If these materials are lost or damaged during the year, your child will be financially responsible for replacing or repairing them as the situation warrants.
