Mr. White Chemistry

1. Go to the “Grades & Other Helpful Links” icon of my website. Click and go to the 1st link where it says “UTexas Online Practice Site”. Click on that site.

• Click on “My Courses”. An orange & white site will appear.

• Click on “I need an EID” and then “Get a UT EID”.

• Follow the instructions to get one—put your EID AND your password into the “CONTACTS” of your cell phone.

• Anything in “contacts” doesn’t get erased when you get a new cell.

• If you have problems DO NOT CREATE A 2ND EID. This makes things worse, see me at after school instead. The EID is different from your SHS ID number.

• Once you have your EID and password go back to my website and put my website’s address into the contacts of your phone.

• This is in case you have to access this information from a computer you do not normally use.

• Remember: Anything in “contacts” doesn’t get erased when you get a new cell.

• Click “My Courses” to access the login page.

2. Once in, click the “Enroll in New Course” button.

• CLASS NUMBERS…………

General Chem: 92883

Honors Chem: 92881

Physics: 92880

• Hit the “Lookup Class Information” button.

• You will use a drop down menu on “Courses Found” to ensure you are signing up for the correct class. You should see my name if you did.

• Click on “Request Enrollment”. You will be notified when I have processed your request.

3. Go into your class, download and print your first assignment.

4. FOR YOUR ONLINE SECURITY BE SURE TO CLICK “LOG OFF” WHEN YOU ARE DONE. THIS IS VERY, VERY IMPORTANT FOR SECURITY REASONS.

5. Work each question from your printed copy. Login again & submit its answer before it is due. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE! This gives you a chance to contact me if problems occur.

6. Random guessing on multiple choice questions WILL cause a negative score!

7. Continue submitting answers until the due time.

8. Due time posted is CENTRAL TEXAS TIME. We are 2 hours ahead of that.

(ie) If 11:00 pm is posted then the due time is actually 9:00 pm for Pacific Time.

• DO NOT ROUND ANSWERS FOR FREE RESPONSE QUESTIONS! (AKA THOSE YOU ENTER NUMBERS IN)

(Furthermore, do not round any “intermediate” answers either. (“Intermediate” means the subanswer on the way to the final one.

(Do NOT round Periodic Table atomic masses. Use exactly what the PT shows.

• Scientific notation is entered as follows:

-5.6 x 10-3 is entered as -5.6e-3, where “e” means “times 10 to the ….”

6.022 x 1023 becomes 6.022e23

What if you get a number like 1.233456789 x 10-15?

****HINT: Fill in ALL NUMBERS YOUR CALCULATOR SHOWS. No rounding!

Answer: 1.233456789e-15 will be put in answer box.

• What about entering units?

If the question is multiple choice then they will have the units listed with the answer already.

You do not have to enter units for problems where you type in the answers. Just type in the correct numbers.

Work-arounds for computer/internet breakdowns:

• Print the assignment right after it is posted so you are always prepared.

• Use the computers in the library, or other classrooms before/after school or at lunch to copy or print out the assignments.

• See me for individual needs. Do this WELL AHEAD of the due date!

• “My computer/printer had issues” is NOT an acceptable excuse for not making the deadline since the assignment is uploaded well ahead of time.

• You should be submitting around SIX questions per day to prevent this from occurring.

• I highly recommend to SEE ME if you get an answer wrong more than twice.

• Make sure you check the above rules if you know you are getting something correct on paper but the computer continues to mark it incorrect.

Reading the files (for UTexas pdf and for other files you download):

• If you have Microsoft office you can probably read all online resources. If not, the following may be helpful.

o Files ending in .PDF (online HW) you may need to get Adobe Reader at:

▪ http:/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

o Files ending in .doc, .xls, or .ppt – you may need Microsoft Word viewer, excel viewer or PowerPoint viewer, respectively, if you don’t have Microsoft Office. You can find these at :
