QUESTIONS FOR FURTHER UNDERSTANDING:

Type 2:

1. Achilles is considered to be the first tragic hero in Western literature. Evaluate the extent to which the following factor contributes to his tragedy:

Achilles leaves the war in order to teach a lesson to Agamemnon and, to a lesser extent, the other Greek leaders. However, he must put that lesson aside and reenter the way in order to avenge the death of Patroculus.

2. What kind of person is Hector? What tests of character confront him? To what extent does he pass them? Which temptations does he resist, and which does he find irresistible? Why? How does his behavior affect his heroic image?

TYPE 3:

After viewing the movie Troy, write a 4 or more paragraph essay discussing the text and the film. Please use this question as a guide “Is the movie Troy a “good” version of Greek Mythology that should be considered as an alternative and/or supplement to reading The Iliad?”

o The introduction should include the title of the two works, the authors, director, etc…

o The thesis should state your opinion, which you will support through the two points below.

o One paragraph should discuss the use of gods and director’s viewpoint

o One paragraph discuss the overall adaptation of the work

o The conclusion should sum up the essay and give your final thought
