Athens vs. Sparta Debate

Which is the better place to live?

Scenario:

Five neutral city-states (Thebes, Argos, Delos, Mantinea, and Syracuse) are interested in joining leagues with either Athens (Delian League) or Sparta (Pelopponnesian League). Your job is to convince the city-states to join your league. The stronger your league the stronger you are in the instance of warfare, which happens often in the Greek empire. A panel of representatives from each city-state will decide which league they want to join after hearing your arguments regarding various issues of your city.

Directions:

1. You will be assigned a city (Sparta / Athens) and two topics to research:

a. Government Structure and Political Organizations (social structure)

b. Military & Naval Strength

c. Education, life style & values, & cultural achievements

d. Role of Women in society

2. You may use the following resources:

a. SCAHS Library Database(s)

b. ABC-Clio World History Database (recommended)

c. Appropriate Internet sources: .gov, .edu, .org (depending on the purpose of the organization)

d. World History textbooks

i. Glencoe: Chapter 4

ii. Connections to Today: Chapter 5

3. You will create a document in which you write your notes (bulleted) and a brief (1/2-1 page double-spaced) summary of your topic(s). You must include MLA citations of your sources. This will be printed and handed in to Ms. Thompson.

4. After you have completed the research, you will meet with others in your city and compile the most important facts to present to the panel. *** Remember, the goal is to convince the neutral city-states to join your league.

5. You will create a visual for your presentation. This should include pictures and brief, important texts that will stand out and influence the panel.

Day 1: Present project; pick groups, assign topics, begin research

Day 2: Finish research of your topics, take notes.

Homework: write summary (typed), hand in on Day 4.

Day 3: Begin working on visual.

Day 4: Finalize visual, be ready to present.
