Today you will be researching one of two famous ancient Greek city-states, either Athens or Sparta. Make sure that your research is complete & adequate. Tomorrow we will be using this information to complete a Historical Head Assignment.

ATHENS:

1. Where in Ancient Greece was Athens located? Describe the geography of ancient Athens.

2. When & how was ancient Athens established?

3. On the line provided below construct a timeline of important events in Athenian history. Be sure to include the following events: the development of democracy, the Persian War, the Golden Age of Athens (aka the Age of Pericles), the reign of Pericles, the establishment of the Delian League, the Peloponnesian War.

8. Describe the educational system of ancient Athens. Who went to school? At what age? What was the purpose of Athenian education? What was the focus of Athenian education?

9. How were Athenian women treated? According to Athenian men & leadership, what was the purpose of women in their society?

10. Based on your research, as well as your previous knowledge describe Athenian culture. In other words, what did the ancient Athenians value? In terms of society & culture what were they most focused on?

11. Describe the relationship between the Athenians and the Spartans.
