Happy New Year! As we welcome 2017 and embrace the fresh beginning of a new year, I believe it is imperative that we look back and reflect upon the events of the past year. 2016 has been an extraordinarily challenging year for professional law enforcement, not only in Alabama, but throughout our country. In the wake of highly publicized events involving police and community, there has been a groundswell of scrutiny often echoed in mistrust of police. We should know that the majority of people embrace us and appreciate the necessary and dangerous work we do. This is so because the overwhelming number of law enforcement officers in Alabama care deeply about the communities they serve.

I must say it has been an honor serving you as your President of the Alabama Association of Chiefs of Police for the 2016 ? 2017 term. I am proud to follow a long line of professional law enforcement leaders who have led this association by promoting professionalism, integrity, education and training. I want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve in this role. I would also like to thank the leadership of the City of Demopolis for their support.

The Executive Board of the Alabama Association of Chiefs of Police would like to thank all Alabama law enforcement agencies for keeping the communities of our state safe. It takes a cooperative effort by all individuals dedicated to their profession to ensure that we use whatever methods necessary to keep our cities safe. AACOP is comprised of very intelligent and innovative people who are knowledgeable in law enforcement, leadership and legislation.

AACOP has been involved and extremely proactive in matters affecting our profession. We have spent countless hours throughout the State to help shape the future in positive ways. Our end goals must always be aimed at supporting and protecting police officers and the communities we serve. To that end, I am proud to report that AACOP has worked diligently on your behalf to implement the First Responders 50% off tuition program with Faulkner University. This program currently allows 50% off on your college degree to all first responders in the State of Alabama. I feel that this is a significant step towards our officers getting their desired degree at half the cost.

Thanks to Chief Ernest Finley and the Montgomery Police Department for their support and assistance with the conference and hosting chief's night. Special thanks to Adrian Bramblett and Joe Roy for your dedication and loyalty to this association. Words cannot express my appreciation for these two servants of AACOP for they make the job easy.

In closing, again welcome to the AACOP Winter Conference 2017 and I look forward to working with each of you for the betterment of our profession and communities

Your President

Tommie J. Reese Chief of Police City of Demopolis, AL
