City of Beau ful Maples
Start at 200 Miami, original home of the Korthanke's who moved here in 1918. Inspired by the maple tree on their property, they planted seeds from this tree and gave the seedlings to anyone who wanted them. Mature maples grow all around town and give Hiawatha a beautiful red-maple glow in the fall.

Just inside the gate of the cemetery is a Civil War-era cannon, circa 1865. It is surrounded by the graves of 18 Civil War veterans. At the northeast corner of the cemetery is a veteran's memorial for soldiers of all wars, including Iraq.

In 1855 President Pierce gave Abigail Crossdale this section of land as recompense for her husband's death in the War of 1812. Because she lived in the East, Abigail sold the land never having seen it. Barn owner Wayne Starr created this Crossdale coat of arms in her honor. It's okay to pull up to the barn for a close view.

John Davis erected this incredible memorial for his wife, Sarah who died in 1930. By 1934, the memorial contained 11 life-sized statues made of Italian marble and covered by a marble canopy. The statues depict stages of John and Sarah's lives. From U.S. 73, 1/2 mile east on Iowa to Mount Hope Cemetery.

The Halloween Frolic, the oldest Halloween event in the nation, had its beginnings in 1914 with Elizabeth Krebs leading the change from pranks and vandalism to one of treats and games. Her grave is located north of the Davis Memorial.

On the south side of this 1938 WPA building are granite markers recognizing members of the "130th Regiment Who Rose to the Rank of General Officer." You'll find the "General's Walk" around a tree surrounded by a large circle of white rock.
Over five miles of mowed trails are available on this beautiful 480-acre property. The public is welcome to roam the grounds and the hike the trails that are open every day during daylight hours. The barn is currently closed to the public.

Morrill Dr. is an easy 1/2 mile paved walk.
We encourage you to check out this gem of public artwork tucked into a small plaza at the Ci zen State Bank in Hiawatha. The steel sculpture rises 15 feet into the air and weighs 750 pounds! Read the full story on the BKRT website.

Constructed as a WPA project in 1939 using locally quarried limestone. The civic center will be open so visitors can view the wonderful architecture inside.

A plaque on a red glacial rock marks the site of the Kickapoo Presbyterian Mission established in 1856. Its purpose was to educate and Chris anize school-age children of the Kickapoo tribe that dwelled in this area. From 1st, 1/2 mile east on 5th, then 1/4 mile south on 7th.

Standing stately, but empty, this former bank was built in 1901. The thick, doublearch entryways trimmed in limestone and the intricately carved details on the facade are evidence of the building's Richardson Romanesque architecture.

A few ghostly buildings let you know you've arrived at Doniphan. Buildings are on Doniphan private property and public access is prohibited. From E. Walnut in Troy, go 1/4 mile south on Main, 1/4 mile east on Lower State, then 10 miles south on Mineral Point.

In 1856 Elwood prospered with steamboat and ferryboat trade. But floods are part of 203 Roseport this community's story, and eventually the river washed away much of the old town.
In front of Irvin Hall nd the large bronze of Dr. William Boone (1860-1936), physician, community leader, educator, and Highland College trustee, was sculpted by his granddaughter Carey Boone Nelson.

The 1845 Presbyterian Mission was originally built to educate the Iowa and the Sac & Fox children. Exterior interpretive signage tells the story of the American Indian tribes relocated to this area. The interior is closed. From Kansas Street, 2 miles east on Main, turn north on Elgin, then west into the driveway.

This six-mile route takes you on winding roads through hills and valleys and wooded landscapes, creeks, and old wooden barns. From Main, go 2 1/4 miles north on Kansas (becomes Colorado), 1/2 mile east on 265 Rd, 1 mile north on Denmark, 3/4 mile east on 275, then 1 1/2 miles north on Dove Creek to Iowa Point. From Iowa Point, continue 4 1/2 miles north on K-7 to White Cloud.
Main and Kansas
The brick wall bearing the Highland College name stands as a memorial to Sophie Ives and Main Rubeti, a young Sac of the Iowa and Sac & Fox Mission. A plaque tells her story and why, following her death, a lodge for Indian girls was built in her honor.
This is the oldest Masonic lodge in Kansas, da ng to 1854. Across the street, a plaque in Degginger Park commemorates this fact.
