|Scenario |You have been given a work placement with the local authority sports development team. You have been assigned to |

| |one of the coaches with in the team and your main role will be to assist the coach with implementing sports |

| |sessions within local primary schools. |

| |The coach from the sports development team believes that to become a top coach you need to have a better |

| |understanding of what makes a good sports coach. The coach has asked you to do some research into this and when you|

| |are ready he has a few tasks for you to do, |

| |

|Task 1 |Produce a presentation to the Year 9 sports leaders, you need to paint a picture in words and give us as much |

| |detail as you can, using examples of two sports leaders that have been successful, about the attributes and |

| |responsibilities of sports leadership. |

| | |

| |You can include the following when looking at attributes and responsibilities in your presentation: |

| |The skills and advanced skills that successful sports leaders require. For example, knowledge and communication |

| |skills. |

| |The qualities and advanced qualities needed by successful sports leaders. For example, confidence and motivation. |

| |The core and wider responsibilities needed by successful sports leaders. For example, health and safety and child |

| |protection. |

| | |

| |In the second part of your presentation to the year 9 sports leaders, you need to use evidence that you have |

| |gathered about attributes and responsibilities to make some judgements about the two sports leaders that you have |

| |chosen. |

| | |

| |You should clearly detail the similarities and differences between the qualities of your two leaders. |

| | |

| |In the presentation to the students, the coach has asked you to show your knowledge and understanding that you have|

| |gained from your research by concentrating on the qualities that are needed and responsibilities required to be a |

| |success as a sports leader. |

|Evidence you must produce for this task |Presentation prepared for a group of year 9 sports leaders. The coach wants you to use examples of sport leaders |

| |that been successful in your presentation and to look for similarities and differences in the sport leaders that |

| |you have chosen. |

|USE OF ACTIVE VERBS |

|VERB |

|PLAIN ENGLISH |

| |

|Describe |

|Try to “Paint a picture” in words. Assume that the person that you are describing to does not know anything about the subject that you are describing. Tell them |

|what you have learned. |

| |

|Apply |

|This is where you are asked to set your knowledge, understanding or skills into action. This may involve the need for you to show off your skills or to relate |

|your knowledge and understanding to the task. |

| |

|Explain |

|Once you have described the subject, often you will need to show your understanding (how), give further details and reasons (where appropriate). (E.g.) Once you |

|have described England’s poor performance in the European Championships, you may also give some reasons why the players did not perform as well as they could. |

| |

|Compare and contrast |

|Here, you need to look for similarities and also any differences that stand out. You must then “paint a picture” of the similarities and differences. (E.g.) If |

|comparing the performances of Sergio Aguero and Wayne Rooney, you may comment on similarities – They are both strikers. Both start most games for their clubs. |

|Both have scored lots of goals for their clubs. In terms of differences, you may comment on Aguero being more successful at International level and the reasons |

|why you think that is. You may also discuss Wayne Rooney’s poor disciplinary record. |
