Step II Let the students know that we are going to talk about a hot topic today: film.

What do you know about films? (The teacher can choose some of the following statements to tell the students) (10 min.)

1. How many people should we need if we want to make a film? (at least 200)

1) What are the Academy Awards?

The Academy Awards are the main national film award in the USA. The awards are granted annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science.

2) When and where does the Awards ceremony take place? How long does it last?

The ceremony takes place in Hollywood every March. It lasts three hours.

3) What does the Oscar statuette look like?

The Oscar statuette stands 34cm tall and weighs 3.85kg. it depicts a knight standing on a reel of film, his hands holding a sword.

4) When were the first Academy Awards granted?

The first Academy Awards were granted on May 16, 1929, when movies had just begun to talk.

5) For what are the Awards given?

The teacher uses computer and OHP to show the stage photos of these films to students. (You can choose some of them). And describe one of your favorite films. And then, ask the students to answer the following questions:

1. Which film is your favorite one?

2. Why do you like it?

3. Please describe the context of the film.

Step III. Group Work (8 min.)

The teacher divides the whole class into four groups.

Let the students look at the pictures on P29. (Or you can use OHP to show them) Each group chooses one picture and has a discussion. And then try to answer the questions as follows: (Encourage the students to forward all possible descriptions and interpretations of what they see in the pictures.)

1. What is happening in this scene? (Tell the students do not base on the film, but according to the picture itself. And try to give a surprised story)

2. What does the person in the picture look like?

3. What do you think happens before this scene?

4. What do you think happens after this scene?

5. What kind of film do you think this is?

Step IV. Explanation (2 min.)

1. Practice doing sth.

There are some verbs which can only be followed by gerund.

Such as: advise, avoid, admit, enjoy, bear, consider, finish, include, imagine, keep, practice, miss, mind, pardon, suggest, stand etc.

e.g. I cannot stand your bothering me all the time.

I have already finished reading Harry Potter.

She can’t help___ the house because she’s busy making a cake. (NMET 97)

Step V. Listening (20 min.)

Let the students open their text books to P29. And tell the students they will listen to a dialogue between a program maker and an actor.

First, let the students look at the exercise to see what information they need to listen for.

Secondly, play the tape, and ask the students to write down the key words.

At last, play the tape again; let the students formulate the answers to the questions in full sentences.

Ask the students to turn to P109.

Tell the students that they are going to listen to three short interview type of conversation in which students are asked about their favorite films and film directors.

After the first listening, the teacher may ask the students the following questions;

1. What the dialogue were about?

2. Do you recognize any of the film titles?

3. Have you ever seen the films mentioned in the script?

4. Have you ever heard about any of the films directors?

Play the tape again; let the students fill the table, and then check answers.

Step 2 Work in Pairs

1. Ask the students to read the biographies of Meryl Streep and Keanu Reeves. And then tell the students that they will interview a famous person and ask them to prepare for the interview by writing the questions that they will ask, such as.

1) Where and when were you born?

2) How many films have you made?

3) Which one is your favorite? Why?

4) What role did you act in it?

Next, ask the students to work in pairs. One takes the role of interviewer and the other takes the role of either Meryl Streep or Keanu Reeves.

Ask the students to use the useful expressions listed in the box.

2. Or the students can interview each other, acting out other famous personalities from the world of Chinese art; writers, actors or film stars that they know.

Step 4 Discussion

Let the students turn to P109. And tell the students that we are going to talk about copyright. It is a hot topic nowadays widely discussed by people.

First, give an explanation about what copyright is. The matter of copyrights, or intellectual property rights, on multi media such as printed matter (books, magazines, newspapers), visual images (photos, reproductions, art work and film), audio (music), style, design medicine and inventions is increasingly taken seriously by Chinese producers and consumers since China entered WTO. Such as illegal copies of COs, VCDs, and DVDs could be bought in many places and they are very cheap.

Let the students work in small groups, and let them prepare for the discussion choosing a role card.

Step 5 Pre-reading

Ask the students to think about making a film. Tell them that as film makers, they cannot spend a lot of money. (a low budget film) Let them think about the two questions on P31.

1. What would the scene be like and what happens in it?

2. Who are the main actors in that scene and what do they do?

2. 介词的选用

1) 根据定语从句中的谓语动词或形容词来选择介词.

3. 介词的位置

介词一般放在关系代词which & whom之前, 但是也可以放在原来的位置上.

e.g. The house in which we live is not large. = The house which/that we live in is not large.

This is the man from whom I learned the news. = This is the man that I learned the news from.

介词和句子动词是固定词组时, 介词一般不前置.

e.g. This is the book which/that I’m looking for.

4. 关系副词或介词 + 关系代词引导的定语从句.

1) when

e.g. I still remember the day when (on which) I first came to Beijing.

She came at a time when we needed her most.

2) where

e.g. That is the house where (in which) he lived ten years ago.

The hospital where (in which) her mother is working is in the western suburbs.

3) why

e.g. I know the reason why (for which) she was so angry.

5. 定语从句的省略.

在定语从句中,如果引导词是关系代词并且在从句中做主语,谓语中有be动词. 则该主语和be动词可以一起省去.
