Students wishing to take courses with Federal Way Internet Academy go to the iA homepage and click on the Apply Here link that will guide them through the registration/enrollment process. Parent/Guardian will begin the registration process. Courses are listed by grade level and then by subject area. After courses are selected, students are placed into a short Orientation. Parents/Guardians are also then placed into their Observer account able to follow their student's progress easily throughout the school year. Before being placed into classes, the iA GSS, Graduation Support Specialist, will go over the student's selections and make or suggest possible recommended changes based upon transcript needs. Once the state and school required documents are completed and submitted and the student has completed their short orientation the student is placed into their class(es). Overview

Serving students online since 1996, Internet Academy (iA) is one of the leading pioneers in online education. iA is a program located in the Federal Way School District, which utilizes Federal Way teachers who are Washington State certified to provide online instruction to students in grades K-12. Internet Academy is accredited through AdvanceEd and provides traditional core and elective classes in a nontraditional manner through an online learning platform. iA's courses meet Washington State goals through standards-based learning. Online learning through the Internet Academy appeals to a wide variety of students with many different needs. Students take courses in order to complete requirements for graduation, access courses that may not be available at their resident school, pursue special interests and talents while remaining on schedule for graduation, the inability to attend a school for various reasons like health, and continue to participate in a home school setting. iA's mission is to provide innovative and challenging academic experiences to students anywhere, anytime through the use of leading technology.

iA offers course opportunities for all students either on a part-time or full-time basis in grades K through 12. K-8 students can select core courses written at grade level as well participate in rotating electives like music, Spanish, and fitness. Students in the middle school may even participate in band online as they work one on one with their instructor using virtual sessions and video. Students in grades 9-12 have core classes, credit retrieval classes, and a wide variety of electives from world languages to strength training to forensic science all within the iA catalog with over 140 courses to choose from to fill transcript/graduation needs.

Students who need a course out of semester offerings can take a semester 1 course during semester 2 or vice versa. Students who need to make up a credit should check IA's credit retrieval offerings. Moving ahead at a faster pace is also available with iA's continual enrollment schedule. Some courses may not be offered at a student's resident school, but available at iA.

Student-Teacher Contact Requirements

Students must follow the state requirements of making weekly academic as well as making satisfactory progress towards successful completion of their course by their given end date. Internet Academy courses run asynchronously and allow times for student's to work with, get help, ask questions, weekly with their teachers. Students use weekly virtual sessions or chat if needed. Students work at their own pace with help from the course learning plan contract in setting up their own daily schedule to work towards successful completion of their learning plan as set up when the student enters the iA program. Students use their learning plan contract to complete lessons and assignments. Students are also strongly encouraged to attend weekly virtual sessions to touch base with their teachers and discuss their progress and/or ask questions. Students are required to make weekly academic contact with each of their teachers through a variety of means and are also required to make monthly academic progress towards successful completion of their learning plan and course.

iA students receive an iA Connect class linking the student with a teacher that will follow that student through their years with iA. The iA Connect teacher stays in contact with each student evaluating their progress and helping to keep them on pace for successful completion.

iA strongly believes in "Significant learning occurs with a significant relationship." Each student attending iA works individually with their teachers as well as with classmates in virtual sessions or field trips or other class gatherings.
