E-ZPass transponders (including Indiana E-ZPass, I-PASS and Ohio E-ZPass) are designed to be mounted inside your vehicle's front windshield, behind the rearview mirror and about 1 inch down from where the roof and the windshield meet (See photo at right). Please make certain you are using your E-ZPass transponder in this manner for it to be 100 percent effective. If not placed in the windshield as stated, there is a good chance that the antenna may miss the signal and your tag will not be read when you reach the gate. Effective May 1, 2012 improperly mounted transponders which require customer service intervention to process your transaction are subject to a $1.00 surcharge per occurrence.

Mounting strips are now available at no cost at all ITR travel plazas and at the Indiana E-ZPass Customer Care Center at MP 87 eastbound in Granger, Ind.

It is important to note that some vehicle makes and models have alternative mounting instructions. These vehicles have a near optically clear metallic coating, and this special coating can go by several names, including Solar Ray, Solar Tint, heat-reflected, Insulated or Insta-Clear. This coating should not be confused with the colored tint along the top of the windshield, which should have little to no effect on transponder performance. However, the special coating does have a negative effect on the radio waves used by all E-ZPasscompatible transponders.
